I have a 2008 Tioga with a V10 Triton engine with over 108,000. The engine runs and purrs like a kitten. In addition to doing a tuneup, oil change, what other inexpensive items can I replace in order to extend the life of the engine? I replaced the air filter, flushed the tranmission fluid as well as the engine cooling fluid. I am thinking of changing the fuel filter. Does this engine have a PCV valve? Should I consider replacing the spark plug cables? Nothing is broken, but I like to tinker with the engine and keep it in tip top shape. Thx.

The Triton V-10 does not have spark plug cables you basically have a high voltage coil for every spark plug, when you do the maintenace of the plugs you disconnect the wires on the "coil" and then you pop the coil and the "boot" hoppefully both will come out together, to replace the spark plug called a peanut (thin 5/8th socket) you are going to need a thin spark plug tool and an extention since the plugs are nestled in a hole, make shure that before you remove the boots you blast the area with air to remove any debry lying arround the area, then before you remove the spark plug give the hole another blast of air to remove what ever may have fallen while removing the boot, I do recomend to do one plug at a time, blast of air,pull coil, repace plug, when assembling spark plug use an aluminum based antizese not a copper one, then use a dielectric paste on the boot and the inside of the boot, reassemble and move to the next plug, when all are done connect the cables back, be carfull in torking the plugs some times there is a problem with some heads.The fuel filter is on the left frame rail "inside" and has a plastic holder with a screw on top that holds the filter to the frame, the filter requiers a tool to pop the ends off, your parts supplier will have the tool, after you have the filter out with the mounting plastic, drain it and you might have a hard time geting the filter out of the mount, it is nearlly imposible to do it on the frame, make shure that you pay attention to the direction of flow, the filter has an arrow, for Gods sake have person with a fire extinguisher wile you do this.I hoppe that you used distilled water when you serviced the cooling system, most tap water contains to many minerals and cause a lot of problems.I hope it helps a little.navegator

Many people neglect to replace the rear axle fluid, and brake fluid should be changed around 6-7 years old. Transmission fluid normally lasts for about 15,000 miles, but can last longer with good care and keeping it cooler. I put a coolant water filter on my RV when it was new. It removes any sand or minerals floating around in the engine water. Napa #Fil4070 and a kit to install it FIL 4019. I only used distilled water too. Wash the battery terminals. Not much else that I can think of.The spark plug change method was well described above. Make sure that you are using a inch torque wrench. Some model years it really mattered not to overtighten the spark plugs. Yours is a later design. Fred.

While you are under there I would check/clean any grounds.

Believe it or not those cheap Chilton manuals you can pick up at auto part store has a pretty good section of maint. A lot of missing information as you get more in detail in other sections but maint section is pretty good IMO. The Motorcraft filter for those is FL 820 I believe. They have silicon valve in them that prevents or keep more oil in upper part of engine than others. The valve prevents "cold starts" or starting when with most of oil in crank case, so they say. And price is right also. Walmart used to have oil filter and oil. Would also buy one of those oil drain valves, maybe somebody know the name but they save the mess sometimes involved with oil changes. None of the maint is hard to learn. The one of reasons why I do mine is it also gives me a chance to look at other stuff on vehicle. Don't forget to clean your MAF. Every time I change oil I give MAF a shot of cleaner and grease front tie rods (don't know if yours is sealed or grease fittings) I do those when oil is draining. Do some looking around on COP or (coil over plug) to see how your plugs get their spark. Some people get a lot of miles on those things. 3000,000 or 400,000 thousand not uncommon for those that keep up on things.Also give generator its maint

Try to find a local shop that has been there for a long time and stay away from the chain store mechanic shops. Wife took her truck, against my advice, to a

local chain store lube and tune and they tried to sell her a new air filter. I just replaced the air filter. so next time you drive around town and you notice that

shop tucked in the back stop in and check them out. ask neighbors,friends or the local NAPA store. They can give you some advice.

Spoke to my friend jerry at the race track Saturday, jerry has been doing transmissions for 35 years. He advised me to change tranny fluid at 30,000 miles.

At 15 he says, you are most likely wasting money. Best way to check is the color and the sniff test. Smell burnt? Change it . You can also have your fluids lab

tested for around 30 bucks. I had my engine oil done at 30K on my Duramax diesel pulling a 32ft. trailer weighing in around 15K and the analysis said 6500

miles between changes using the synthetic .

I will need to go back to my mechanic. A month ago, when I wanted him to change all ten spark plugs, he quoted me a price of $600.00, which I declined. He did not mention the boots or anything else, just labor and plugs. This was at a Meineke in California. This is way out of line, isn't it?

When I had all 10 spark plugs replaced at 112,894 (9 May 2013) the mechanic told me that he replaces the plugs and boots. He said that the coil packs, which are about $75 USD each, only need to be replaced when they fail. My coil packs would good and none required replacing. I was out the door for $304.60 USD

Just a thought, if you are a Canadian reader...If you have the V10, consider buying one or two coils from a US source. Coils will cost you about $80.00 each in Canada. You can find them for 30 in the US, even less if you are into gambling. Having just had the costly experience..I am buying a couple in the next couple of weeks while in the US, just to have on hand, should there be another failure.

Clean the the mass airflow sensor, flush the engine and radiator. I think there is a kit for the mass airflow sensor. Check all the hoses, front break hoses, and serpentine belt. I replaced all of them, but mine is a 1998.

Anybody thinking of adding a catch can for this system? Maybe preventing oil consumption? Locating and mounting it can be a challenge.
