Upgraded Driver Seat "AIR SUSPENSION"

So I'd been contemplating installing an Air suspension seat for a while.

Finally did. I had a set of Hadley air horns with a compressor sitting around that I never installed. Started researching diferent truck seats. Found a Sears Elite 80 for $760 locally(new), grey leather. Went to check it out, now I had read a lot of truckers also liked the Bostrom wide ride seat, I had seen that one before but didn't like the overall quality, plus the back cycler seemed too gimmicky for me.

After seeing the Sears in person it was love at first sight. So many adjustments. The bottom cushion slides independently of the main slide for adjustment, dual lumbar upper and lower, infinite adjustable arm rests, height was the big one, the only thing I didn't get was the optional swivel base, which I could always add it later. The Sears has a removable 4" riser bolted to the base which can removed if need be. I left it on and it's perfect.

Installation was a breeze, my battery compartment is pretty much below my drivers seat. Ran the air line into the battery compartment had enough room to install the air compressor. I ran power cables to the chassis battery along with cables to the house batteries with an isolator so If I need to I can switch where the compressor gets it's power from. As long as you have no air leaks the compressor only runs when making adjustments.

The seat is amazing. Now I'm looking to see if Sears will sell just the seat with no base to replace the passenger side. It would have been nice to get a color to match the passengers seat but I really don't like the cream beige color of the original seats anyhow.

  • I would love to put that in my Chevy Express Van but Chevy decided that the seat base would be a great place to put a power center. Is the base of the seat open?
  • A good solution. If we were contemplating keeping our rig indefinitely, I was thinking along similar lines. As things stand, it's unlikely we'll keep it for longer than 2 more seasons.

My experience with air-suspended seats was gained when I did a 2 year post retirement stint as a transit bus driver. The buses had a Recaro seat with similarly independent adjustments to the Sears one mentioned. My plan had been to find the wrecking yards where old buses go to die and buy one there. For a couple more seasons, I'll continue *****ing about the Flexsteels we have (but not on the forum!)
  • The base is not open, flat plate bolts to floor, the are openings for hoses and what not.

That's one reason I'm keeping the old seat, the new one is coming with me when and if we sell. I did shop some yards and most were pretty beat up, the ones that weren't had some high prices.

The pictures make this seat seem as bulky as the flex steals. Its definetly not. Huggs you pretty good.
  • I looked in to air suspension seats to address our back issues but decided it was cheaper to sell the RV.

As in give up the RV? $800 upgrade wasn't really for the air suspension, it was more to replace the unsupportive, crappy Flex steel, that was obviously designed for comfort when stopped not driving.
