W22 FRONT BRAKE ROTORS AND PADS
I'm looking for a response from someone who has done a front rotor and pad replacement other than the workhorse recall.
My son-in-law has a 2003 W22 chassis. The recall was done a few years back. They replaced the calipers but would not replace the rotors even though the had small cracks on the whole surface of the rotor.
He purchased some new rotors and pads that are after market and much better than the stock units. I don't have the brand name offhand.
There are RV shops here in So. Cal. who will provide the labor to replace them but I'm amazed how ignorant some of these so called techs are. One shop told him he didn't know what he was talking about when he asked if they had the proper equipment to torque the lug nuts to 475 ft.lbs. They said the torque was not that high. Spec on the W22 with 22.5 wheels is 450-500.
Another shop said they would also repack the wheel bearings along with replacing the rotors and pads. Well the W22 has oil bath lubrication on the front hubs, not greased bearings.
We have thought of doing it ourselves, but getting the right torque on the lug nuts is a concern. I assume the rotors slide off once the wheel and caliper are removed, can someone confirm this?
I did contact a shop in Chino that seems knowledgeable (McBrides),
and he may go that route. The labor quoted was $300-$400.
That doesn't sound to bad.
My point is beware of some shops who claim to know their stuff. These statements I gave from them were from well known dealers in the area.
