Wall St. Journal article Oct. 12th. "Home on the Road"

There was a very nice multi-page article in the Journal on the Class A RV life. It showcased three RV resorts; Hearthside Grove Motorcoach resort in Petoskey, Mich.,Desert Shores Resort in Indio, Calif., and Las Vegas Motorcoach resort. A few key statistics. 9% of all Americans own RV's. 2017 Motorhome shipments; Class A 23,343 up 3% over 2016. Class B 5,249 up 28.4 %. Class C 34,046 up 21.7%. A record 504,600 RV's we're shipped to dealers this year, a 17% increase. Shipments this year expected to be 539,900. Class A shipments were 62,000 last year. The top seller of class A diesel units is Lazydays just east of Tampa with 1500 to 2000 units at any given time.
With all those sales, no wonder we can't book a site :(
One guy bought an end of year 2017 45 foot Entegra Anthem, listed over $500,000, for $302,000. He looks happy in the picture.

  • Sorry, did not mean it that way, but the reality is that it takes a whole lot of dough to be able to spend any amount of time at any of the resorts listed.
    Sorry Mr. Mark!

There are plenty of folks who are at "Home on the Road" who could never afford to stay at these places.

Why such a cheap shot at MM?
Reminds me of the old saying if you ain't got nothing nice to say don't say anything.

The above resorts mentioned have lots that are sold individually and put into a rental pool.

Motorcoach Country Club has 424 spaces and Desert Shores has 141 spaces. There are many more luxury resorts in the area not mentioned. Across from MCC is the Outdoor Resorts with 419 spaces. The Las Vegas Resort has 407 spaces.

The three major Prevost converters probably build 50 new coaches every year combined. In 10 yrs. that 500+ converted coaches looking for a nice resort to visit or buy a lot.

Bill, splurging for a night or two at one of these resorts would be a great treat! Life is short!

I have stayed at nearly every resort mentioned expect Petowsky (just haven't been in that area since it was built). Not one was worth the price paid IMHO. I like a pool and a spa if I am staying for awhile but I can get all of that at a very nice RV park for so much less. I also used to own an RV lot in a park in FL. The rental pool is a joke for the owners and the renters still pay a high price as it is set by the RV Park and not the lot owner. It might help pay your monthly fees but usually it's not even enough for that.
I was lucky to get out of that lot years ago and I try to avoid all of the "resorts" that are based upon RV ownership. The ongoing costs are way to high compared to the usage most owners get from them. The resale market is often a loss for the owners and the "one-upmanship" from lot to lot can be sickening. I'm all about letting folks who have it spend it, it's just not for me.
  • Sounds like a good article with good information.
How ever they missed the point. The average RV er
Doesn't stay at those kind of resorts.

  • Desert Shores is unique in that you can have a very nice coach-house with a pool and a garage for your car (individually owned lots).

Just down the street is the Motorcoach Country Club which is also very nice. The coach-houses are smaller and it seems to be a more active park (parties, socializing, etc.). We know a couple of people that own at MCC.

We go to Las Vegas 2 or 3 times a year staying the Las Vegas Motorcoach Resort, very nice place and just about 4 miles from the strip. We have been going to LVMR for at least 10 yrs.

    Safe travels,
    MM.
  • It was a great article in the WSJ. I'm familiar with Hearthside in Michigan (great place for larger coaches). I've heard they are partnering to build a second resort in NE Ohio, along Lake Erie. For us mid-westerners, this is great news...not many places in our region that can accommodate larger coaches with so many amenities.
