Weight questions

Hi,

We are new to RVing and have a question about load limits. We loaded the RV (we are full time), filled fuel, water and propane and drove onto a Cat scale. We got the following:

GAW (forward) 11920
GAWR is 12000

GAW (rear) 19760
GAWR is 20000

So GVW is 31680 and GVWR is 32000

I guess we are just below limits. My question is, can we tow our 2600Lbs car if the GCWR is 42000.
Also being close to the limit is a real problem or can we live with it as this is as heavy as we will ever be with all tanks full.

Thanks

  • 2chiefsRus and Executive, I am heading from Vancouver BC to San Fran in 2 weeks. any idea on where along the way I can find a place that can do 4 corners?

    Ivylog, the tires are 275/70/22.5
  • If you're going to keep the weight you have, then IMO, four corner weighing is important. You may have one or more corners grossly overloaded...I found that out when I weighed mine...Dennis
  • If you have the chance (maybe at a rally or if you are Escapees members) it might still be good to get a true four corner weighing done. We were under on each axle but over on one corner. After getting the four corner weighing done, we moved some things around to lighten that corner.

Just got 6 new Michelin XZA2 Energy tires and based on the chart I should have 90 psi in the rear and 110 in the front.

Sounds about right, but without knowing what size tires there is no way to know if 100/90 is correct. Most of us go 5 psi over what the chart calls for.
Good thing you are coming from a boat so maybe you will not need to go on a diet in a year when your re-weigh. You may need to loose 10 lbs to make up for the 10 lbs for the tongue weight from the tow bar.:B Yes, you could tow a heavier toad.
  • Butch has the right answer!

After a while, you'll find that some stuff you have, you never use, so take it out of the RV!

  • You are in fine shape, but keep in balance what comes in and what goes out and yes you could tow up to 10000 pounds. Should ride pretty nice just make sure tire pressures are correct and tires are in good shape (age and condition).
  • Thanks for the quick reply. We really need most of it since we have been living on a boat full time and ditched most the "6 months not used" items long ago. There will be about 200lbs coming off next week to help the situation but there won't be new weight coming in.

So theoretically I can tow a 10,000lbs car? is this how you calculate the GCWR?
  • You really don't NEED all that stuff you packed in MH.

    Start by going on 'diet'

Keep only what is REALLY NEEDED
Not what you think you will need
Not what you think you might need
Not what you think would be good to have

    BASICS.........LESS is BEST

    We FT for 7 yrs.
1st year we did like the Conestoga Wagon trains......6 mos. Stuff got removed, 6 mos. later more stuff (ALL of it should have never been packed)
And then we joined the '1 bag in/2 bags out' mind set.
Just really do NOT need all that stuff. (And if you find you really need something you can buy it)

No reason to start out almost overweight.
    You only have:
80# left on front axle rating
240# left on rear axle rating
320# left on MH Gross rating

And having RV full of fuel, water and propane is the way to travel. They should not be used as means of reducing weight.
    Need the fuel
Water......what happens if you go some place and their water is bad, turned off/unavailable?
Propane......another fuel source that makes RV self-contained

Reducing weight is done by getting rid of all that stuff that is not needed.
One can accumulate when in a S&B House...mobile home---not so much.

If you haven't used it in 6 mos.........get rid of it.

Yes you can tow that 2600# car
  • You're already at your limits and just starting out. You will have to join the "if something gets brought IN, something must be thrown OUT" club....you won't have any problem towing a 2600# car, unless you start filling that up too.....:)...Dennis
