- jrlibbie09ExplorerUmmm, I was concerned about the extention point on my frame to the trailer hitch, and just had an extra plate welded on at the original seam. Had batteries turned off at the time. What type of damage could happen to the frame itself? It is a 2012 Ford Chassis.
- DaveinetExplorerIf it is Workhorse, you can not weld the frame. It is in fact heat treated. Workhorse very specifically states do not weld or even drill the frame. People may state that they got away with it, but they didn't ever test the strength of the frame afterword.
- FIRE_UPExplorerSimple274,
I've welded on many motor home frames without issue. Yes, todays (and many years back) have lots of electronics on board for running just about everything on and in these coaches so, while it may be a pain for you, disconnecting both negative and positives on all the batteries, including house and chassis, will keep from damaging those electronic components. Plus, always try and make sure you put the ground clamp of the welding cable as close to your welding project as you can. Good luck.
Scott - Mark_HeislerExplorer IIyes you can weld on your motor home. they do it every day. just unhook your battery for the house and motor.then your good to go
- vjstangeloExplorerIf the frame is heat treated steel, then by all means DO NOT weld. Doing so will change the physical attributes and crystalline structure of the steel at the weld location due to the high temperature of the weld. Every semi-truck frame I have seen has a "Do not Weld" warning affixed to the frame in a prominent place along with the fact the frame is heat treated.
- hermosilloleosExplorerI have done some welding on Trucks and trailers.
I have always been told to disconnect batteries.
I would thick a motor home would be the same.
I would make sure to be on the safe side. - chuckftboyExplorerI don't know how true, but I've been told the high current can damage the on board computer. Maybe you should ask in one of the chassis forums.
