These are the most popular. Keep in mind there is no best one out there. Some need offroad capability and others don't and that criteria will narrow down your search.
CRV - light and drives nice
Ford Edge - drives nice (almost picked this over the GC when we were looking) Do extensive research on towing as Ford has made changes.
Liberty - Similar to Grand Cherokee only lighter
Grand Cherokee - heavy (5400lbs), mild offroad and also drives very nice
Wrangler - Nothing competes with it offroad in stock form but is also does not drive as nice as other I listed. 2 door is terrible if you have company. 2007 on up models drive nicer than the older ones.
One complaint you will hear a lot about is dead batteries on the CRV. If properly setup you can avoid those headaches.
I have a 2011 Grand Cherokee, 95, 2002, 2003 Wrangler and 2002 Malibu.
