wheel cover socket wrench

I have a 2007 Fleetwood bounder workhorse w22 I need to know where to buy wheel socket wrench to take lugs off wheel covers

  • Using a regular socket, with an extension, will allow you to rest the extension on an adjustable jack stand for support. Once supported you can then get plenty of leverage to loosen or tighten the lugs to the 475 Ft even if you have to use your foot and a pipe extension on the breaker bar. Of course the lug nuts holding the wheel cover should never be very tight but sometimes they are put on using the same torque wrench at the tire shop.
  • In my experience, the T-handles usually supplied are flimsy and you're better served with a standard socket, extension and breaker bar. While those nuts holding the covers on aren't supposed to be torqued on too tightly, they either manage to tighten themselves or, probably more commonly, the techs who put them on last torqued the heck out of them.

My original T-handle wrench just didn't have enough leverage to remove them in some instances, and it just started twisting when I put a pipe over the end.

Granted, they shouldn't be on that tight, but sometimes they are.

  • I got most of my larger sockets at one of the auto stores. I prefer the heavy black impact sockets in 1/2 inch over the regular shiny ones. Your wheel cover "lugs" as you call them have a slightly larger real lug nut under them holding the wheel on. If I remember correctly I needed both 31 and 33 mm on my 19.5 wheels. Also the torque on the workhorse chassis wheel lug nuts (not cover retainers) is over 400ft/lbs. TMI but good info if you need to go there.
  • Only because I have seen it happen at an RV park..........."Be sure to remove the stainless steel decorative lug nut covers from the lugs that actually hold your wheel cover in place. On my W chassis, four of the eight lugs have covers that can be taken off by hand and then you will see the steel nut that has to be removed to loosen the wheel cover."

I like your idea of using a standard socket which could be purchased at an auto parts store. It could then be made to fit your wheels instead of the generic size. This got me to thinking about my own cover wrench, which I have broke once. I need to get the parts and make myself a new one.

  • Good luck in finding. I did once see the lug wrench at Camping World.
