Windshield rock ding

My 08 Itasca received a 3/8” rock chip in the windshield a few years ago. After driving about 30,000 miles with no increase in the chip size, I decided to see how well the repair could be.

I heard good things about Safelite on this forum, so I called them. They wanted around $100 plus around $15 for “tools and materials”.

My insurance company (State Farm) said it would be no cost to me (and no premium increase) and my insurance rep also said Safelite was good, so they connected me for an appointment.

The insurance company said I had to be satisfied with the repair, Safelite initially said that the chip would be 80% gone when they were done.

The tech came to my house and said that the chip would still be 80% visible after the repair but I told him to go ahead anyway.

After 45 minutes, the repair was done, supposedly cured by UV. The chip looked much better: only a shadow of its circumference and a spot in the middle where I assume the resin was injected. The rep said that the spot might clear after the wipers are used over time.

Instead of waiting, I tried Meguiars #9 swirl remover with a foam pad at 1200 rpm. Not much change but I wished I had the repair done a long time ago. It was in the passenger’s line of sight and was a blem on a number of through-the-windshield photos.

Summary: At least for now the chip is much less visible than before.

We had my wife's windshield replaced due to a crack in her field of vision, which State Farm paid for (we also had a $100 deductible, which we paid). I think that their policy relates to single rock dings, which they used to cover. I'm glad that they folded the additional repair into your claim. I had been very happy with State Farm Insurance resolving any claims that I've had.

I just had a rock ding repaired by Novus for $55. State Farm Insurance does not cover it, apparently they stopped after Katrina.

I wanted to do it before things begin to freeze/thaw around here. $55 is money well spent for me.

Thanks to all for the advice. Think I'll just get it fixed and pay the $65 myself.

I have a ding on the inside of my MH's windshield. I was working on the center overhead TV cabinet, using my cordless power screwdriver. I put it down on the top of the passenger-side dashboard and it rolled down and hit the windshield. Of course, the Phillips tip was what actually hit the glass!

I have AARP Hartford insurance and had two chips in my windshield repaired at no charge just a few weeks ago. They will not raise your rates for this repair. Safelite came out and did a very good job on the repairs. You'd have to look with a magnifying glass to find the spots.
I've got $950 deductible and don't want to pay for a new windshield if I can help it.

Just contact your insurance company and tell them: "Hey, this happened. Will anything happen to my rates or anything if I claim this?" They'll tell you. More than likely they'll prefer to eat the $65 repair than a windshield replacement if they leave it in your hands and you let it go.

Our two vehicles received over 16k in damages last June due to a storm while sitting in the drive way. 4 months later one of them had a windshield(new window)rock ding while in Montana. Insurance had it fixed and no increase in premium the next year from either claim.
