Windshield getting dinged

My windshield is getting dinged up . It has mostly pits almost like sandblasting. This is on a jeep commander I pull behind motorhome with all 4 down. Any suggestions? In thinking about covering the brand new windshield i just had put in with some sore of thick material while towing. Looking at the thick vinyl used under tile bathroom I shower floors
Thanks
Ken

I made one like this with bubble wrap that went against the windshield and a thin nylon material bonded on top of the bubble wrap. I used this when I traveled on the dirt roads in Alaska, the bubble wrap absorbed the impact from the rocks being thrown by on coming trucks.
  • I can get a replacement windshield for $150 installed. I can get the front end of the vehicle painted (fenders, hood, grill) for $400. Why would I spend any more than that on something to protect them?

That is kind of like people spending $3 on a bookmark when a single dollar bill will work just fine.

    Highly agree!!

Mud flaps behind the wheels is all you need - not the advertisement on the rear.

On our Alaska trip folks were actually removing that stiff flap across the rear. We saw the layer of large rocks laying at the base of their windshield from traveling an area of construction. We had just come through the same area and didn't get any damage since we didn't have the big flap.
  • I have the roadmaster rock guard but we just installed the protect-a-tow on my daughter MH and 2016 Ford Edge, EZ on EZ off.

  • I made a vinyl cover just like bumpy did. Ptoblem when it rained there was enough space next to the cover water would get into the jeep. Tried a commercial cover that hooked into the wheel wells. Wheel wells were too thick to allow them to fastrn securily so sent it bsck for a refund. Also need to be careful, if you find some ting that works make sure it doesn't rub paint off somewhere which can be another problem. I finally gave up and just tow the toad. Lastly I know people who say the wide rock guard causes the pits and take the guard off and no more damage. I am thinking about to trying this solution.

  • There are custom made windshield covers readily available. I bought one for our PT Cruiser that covers the entire front end and the windshield. It was about $400 IIRC.
Sadly I do not remember the name of the company that made it. All I remember is that it was in California. A google search for "towed vehicle front cover" should find it.

    Never mind, I found it:
