Winnebago Sightseer slide retaining strap

My 02 Winnebago Sightseer 27c has a Quickee slide. The prior owner removed the carpet and installed vinyl tile.

Originally, this motorhome was equiped with a retaining strap for the slide. The attachment point for the strap is still on the slide itself, but both the strap and the floor attachment point are gone.

The slide has a dinette that contains the only area for passengers to sit. My daughter will be sitting in this dinette on our next trip.

Is this strap necessary? If it is, I would have to order and the floor attachment point and the strap.
  • They definitely wouldn't do anything to improve crashworthiness. I, like others here, have used it once. Forgot to removing it when I extended the slide, noticed it later with the strap still attached to the slide trim, but the floor bracket still on the strap with the 1/2 in screws (2)in the bracket. I could mail you my strap and brackets, but I personally don't think it would be worth the cost of postage.

  • I used mine once, then it got put in the bag with the manuals.

I saw another guy had cut a 2x4 to fit in the area and covered it with a no slip fabric.
  • I would agree with Doug. We had the same straps on our 2001 Adventurer. We did use them, but every time we took it in for service we had to remove them. The first 2 times we didn't the technician extended the slide without removing the straps. The slide didn't even notice they were there. Both times the screws and retainers in the floor were pulled loose.

In over 100,000 miles we never had a problem with the slide moving out. However if you do develop a minor hydraulic leak the slide can move on one and bind in the opening.

Slide locks and Slide restraining straps are NOT for Crash Worthiness. They are installed to, depending on OEM design
    1. Make a tight upper seal
    2. To keep the room "solid" to prevent movement and noises
    3. To "hopefully" keep the room from creeping out in transit. They will not fully extend, but can creep out if the Motor lock or Hyd system fails to hold pressure. These type restrainers(your is this type), do this job
What I would do for your case, just take a standard Tub/Shower 1.5 inch curtain aluminum rod, cut to fit between the slide flange and wall and install the heavy duty rubber ends and wedge between the slide fascia and sidewall. This is what older OEM's did on slide rooms. This will keep the room solid and in check. You casn do both ends or just 1 end. Doug

This is what it will look like.

  • I'm missing some of the parts for mine and thought about going to Lichtsinn Motor Home Parts down the street from Winnie's plant. They have most everything for Winnies. I haven't because it isn't a problem, it has been more work for me to remount the floor bracket after I forget to remove the strap and extend the slide than it is towatch the slides and make sure they aren't moving.
  • The only time I used those straps was when I forgot to detach them and pulled the molding off the wall. Your motor home is 15 years old and the slide is still there.
