Winterizing Samsung RF18HFENBSR icemaker?

Just replaced the dying Dometic with a Samsung RF18HFENBSR. Don't know what to do with all the room and an icemaker that works! You can see pictures in my other thread.

The installer didn't have specific information on winterizing nor did the product manual. I went on live chat with Samsung customer support. They said to disconnect the water line 24 hours before turning off the refrigerator but leave the icemaker on. This would dump the ice tray and allow the solenoid to open numerous time thus allowing the water to drain into the ice tray and back down the water line.

This makes sense to me. Is this how you winterize your Samsung icemaker? Assume that the RF197 is the same basic refrigerator.

To winterize with the pink stuff would require leaving the water system pressurized with the pink stuff until the icemaker cycled. Often I'm under the weather gun time wise to winterize when returning to Colorado. Really didn't want pink stuff in the ice tray or solenoid.

Thought I would ask now instead of waiting till we head home in March.
  • sailer had it right. Once you slip it in the hole, there is no way to get the back off to get to the ice maker solenoid. I found that out the hard way. I ended up cutting hole in cover.

Provided the water inlet line is below the solenoid that seems to be an acceptable solution. When I replaced my Norcold with a Samsung (Model RF197) I relocated the solenoid to the back of the fridge so I can reach it through the original Norcold access panel. Then when I winterize, I simply disconnect the small hose up to the icemaker so it drains down and then power up the solenoid with a cheater cord until the pink stuff flows.

I like that idea. I'll check it out. May not have the time to do the work before I get home. So, I'll probably have to drain it using Samsung's suggestion.

Thanks again. Sounds like your mod is a good summer project.
