Workhorse w22 engine coolant temperature gauge

The engine coolant temperature gauge on my 2004 Fleetwood Southwind 37C (w22 chassis w/30k miles) first intermittently, then permanently went from reading normal to an almost complete ccw rotation to a point near the little thermometer on the gauge. The engine is not overheating though. Is this perhaps a sensor problem and if so where is it?

My 2005 Suncruiser's Actia dash tests the temperature gauge.

If you diagnostics test does not move your temp gauge, you have no activity on J1850 data bus.

Download the 2004 Workhorse chassis wiring schematic.

  • @ Tom N: Cluster Diagnostics works for other gauges but temperature gauge does not move for 0, 50, 100% tests.
  • You can test your temp gauge through the CLUSTER DIAGNOSTICS MENU TREE. The temp gauge will show 0% then 50% then 100% during the test.

Coolant Temperature is read from the J1850 data bus. If the data bus is not active in the vehicle, the message center will display “No J1850 Activity”.

More info in the 2002 Actia Dash Cluster Service Manual.

  • sounds like a bad ground or a bad temp sensing unit..you may have to find that and clean its connection.usually a probe to a sensor like thing near the water pump..
