Worth paying an inspector?

I'm looking at a 2015 Winnebago class A for sale by owner with only 7000 miles on it. They are selling because of a job change. I've received over 70 photos and it looks like it's in pristine condition. It also comes with a transferrable Cornerstone extended warranty good through 2021 with $100 deductible.

The motorhome is about 1500 miles from our home, so we'd need to fly down to purchase, and then drive it back.

I'm debating whether it's worthwhile to spend an additional $500 to $1000 or so for a pre-purchase inspection by an outside firm? I can do a thorough inspection of the house, and the engine is virtually brand new.

Any feedback?
  • No matter what you do, DO NOT send any money for any reason! I once saw a good friends RV for sale on the internet with lots of pictures and excellent descriptions. My friend was NOT selling their RV but it was a scam using information obtained from information available before they purchased the coach.
If I was going to buy from a private party at a distance I would find an inspector (or RV dealer) willing to do a complete inspection, make arrangements with the owner to go to this inspection together and then if you are both happy with the results, arrange some kind of monetary transfer. Please, don't send any money to any one prior to being able to take possession of the RV.
  • You mentioned that YOU can check the house portion and that the engine is virtually brand new. I personally would spend the money to go see the coach myself and be prepared to close the sale when you get there. $500-$1000 additional for inspections can be spent, while you are there, IF you feel it is necessary. If not, that probably paid for your trip. If things look good and sound good, AND the seller has service records, there really is not much that can go wrong that would not be covered by the extended warranty.
With 70 photos, it does no sound like the seller is trying to hide anything.

I think it is worth spending the money. When you consider the overall cost of the Winnebago, traveling, etc., the fee for an inspection is a very small amount.

Don't forget to check the age of the tires. Just because the RV is a 2015 doesn't mean the tires were made in 2015.

X2. I think it's well worth it & had it done on my coach before we purchased.
