Yard prep for RV parking in Phoenix

I have a concrete slab next to the house where I've been keeping my MH parked, but it gets a lot of sun exposure there. I've been considering backing it back about 50' to the back of the yard where it will get shade most of the day. My yard is pretty compacted (you almost need a jack hammer to plant a shrub) and covered with 3/4"-1" crushed rock. On top of that we average only about 7" of rain a year. To those of you in Arizona, what are your thoughts or experiences with parking a 20,000 lb. rig on the dirt? I wouldn't think it would take as much underlay as back in the mid west or east.

I appreciate any info you may have!

  • Before I built our barn I parked on the dirt alongside the garage...worked OK but with some rain it got a bit soft so I built two pads using railroad ties. Each pad has 6ea 9' long ties spaced 4" apart and just back filled with native dirt. Add a bit of water, let dry and they are perfect.

One downside of parking on the dirt only is that jacks punch post holes aside from that no real issues.

Now with the barn, I have great guest parking including 50A service.
  • If you never lived there you just don't know how hard the earth is there....That thing will never sink.
  • Crush rock should be OK. As mentioned check local zoning restrictions and underground plumbing lines. Crushed rock isn't much different than the slab of concrete. Maybe even better if it drains the 7" of rain better than the slab.
  • I park ours on the dirt. I drove back and forth a couple of times just to pack the top down and after that the ground was like concrete.
  • The gravel will not be a problem since it is like concrete here.
Before you do, check with City regulations on parking restrictions. I recall seeing something about it a couple weeks back that had to do with property lines and such. If a neighbor doesn't like where you park it, make sure you are not in violation of any city codes.
  • I know in Bullhead City you would be fine. Be sure there are no sprinkler lines in the way or they will be broken.
