No, I do not have the engine running when I clean the CAC (Charge Air Cooler)-- that is the "front" piece of the cooling system, with the radiator behind it. The front of the CAC IS, repeat IS where the vast majority of the dirt is deposited, particularly the lower perimeter.
Crawl back on the engine to where you can look straight down between the head and the fan hub. The zirk is normally facing straight up, though I have seen it at 90 degrees to the passenger's side of the engine.
