Yellowing Mirrors and Windshield Cap

We have a 2005 Winnebago Aspect, new to us over the winter.

The (plastic? fiberglass?) side mirrors and cap over the windshield have yellowed and have some gray streaks. They feel rough to the touch.

Last night when I washed the RV for the first time, I tried washing them gently with a Magic Sponge. They look a little better, but still a long ways to go.

Is there anyway to make them white again?

We also have an Aspect. The cap is still ok but the mirrors are beginning yellow. I assumed that it was because they get bugs on them and I scrub them pretty hard to get the bugs off. Noticed that the harder I scrubbed the yellower they got. The paint was just coming off.

Was considering an epoxy type paint that I can roll on. Didn't want to remove the mirror to spray them. Concerned about over spray getting on the rest of the coach if I tried to spray them still attached.

I did not take my mirrors off. Heck I did it one day at a CG took me all of about 10 minutes.

Take a piece of heavy poster board found at any store. Cut it to fit your particular style mirror, and affix it on the mirror side. And then SPRAY AWAY!

Krylon Fusion spray paint is excellent to coat those yellowing parts. They won't yellow again.

You got that right!! Krylon Fusion is like a miracle product. Did the mirrors, stove vent, outside porch light and fridge vent on my first RV and it made the whole RV look like new. The trim around the window on the entrance door was black. I sprayed that white also and made the RV look 4 years newer. I sold that RV to a friend and 8 years later everything I sprayed with the Fusion is STILL white.
    Incredible stuff.

I agree completely. I cleaned well with Acetone and applied two light coats of Krylon Fusion to many yellowing parts and they look great nbow.

If the mirrors were made by Velvac, they will replace them for free. They know they had a

    paint problem

. They replaced mine at no cost, and I kept the old ones I took off.

I did this also with my 2006 MH but that was a couple of years ago. You would need to contact velvac to see if they still offer this replacement program.

    yes.
On the mirrors if you look close there is a pattern of yellow showing thru and they are not 'turning' overall yellow like the plastic trims do. The paint is wearing off in places and the base is yellow colored and showing thru.

  • Wow, what a great thing to know. I bet that works on many outside plastics that live in the desert communities too.

  • Some parts were manufactured without UV protection. They just need to be painted with a sealing paint that matches the rest of the RV.
