Another Navy SOS recipe

2 lbs. of ground hamburger, cooked until brown. Use baster to get all excess grease removed from pot. Add 1 can Cambell's Cream of Mushroom soup. Add 1 can of Cambell's cream of celery soup. Add 1 quart of (we use home canned tomatoes) can use two cans of tomatoes (not drained). Add 1/2 Can of Cambells Cheddar Cheese soup. Stir all ingredients together and warm to hot but not boiling. Ladle over slices of toast.
Add salt and pepper to taste, and can add more cheddar cheese soup if desired.

We make this for breakfast. The Navy called this Minced Beef on Toast.

  • Dicka, you are correct. That is the way I remember it. Actually got used to it.
  • I always understood SOS was chipped beef in a white sauce served on toast. Also called S... on a shingle. :)
  • Not a meal in modern Navy. Unfortunately, not much cooking goes on either. Lots of boil a bag food. "21 day meal rotation" Sure seems like you see the same old meals more often than that.

Ate something in the field with Marines that might fit. Some kind of white gravy with red meat like substance served over hockey pucks. I didn't really like the stuff but it softened the "biscuits" and was hot in the field tent.

What years was this served in the military? The reason I ask is that condensed soups aren't a part of SOS in the military. They would have been considered too heavy for supply line transport prior to 1975.
  • Cheese? Tomatoes? No Lea & Perrins? No flour? May be salt in the soup but no pepper? I might buy off on the mushroom and celery soups, but SOS - No Way!
