This is an induction burner not the regular electric hot plate you mentioned. The burner itself does not get hot, just the pan and food you are cooking. Great safety feature and it cuts down the heat buildup in the small kitchen area we have in our B. Research induction cooking to see how they work.
They do require induction ready cookware. Cast iron and any pan that a magnet sticks to will work great. There are many pots and pans out there now that are induction ready. Take a magnet when shopping should you decide on induction.
After owning one (different brand)for a couple years, I decided to purchase the NuWave for the RV and prefer it to the other one. A less expensive, regular hot plate will work. You have to decide if just as well for your purpose.
I purchased mine at BB&B and used a 20% off coupon. BB&B has a no limit return policy.
