Does anyone here BBQ their trurkey on a charcoal grill? How long do you cook it? Stuffed or unstuffed? Thanks!

I did mine for thanksgiving on my weber kettle grill. Took right at 3 hours. I used Kingsford mesquite charcoal. Start with 25 lit pieces per side, add 8 pieces per side every hour to maintain heat. Works perfectly and the turkey is AWESOME!

11 Minutes per pound unstuffed, 13 minutes stuffed.

Here is a great tutorial on the method. Link

We did a 14 pounder in IIRC between 2.5 and 3 hours and it was still juicy and tender, be sure to put a pan in the center to catch drippings for gravy.

This is textbook Weber instructions and definitely works. Setting the bird in a V shaped roast rack on the grill is also helpful in handling the bird.

Yep. Works like a charm...every time. For those anti-stuffing folks. Try it with some cornbread and sausage stuffing.

  • Coals on side with wood chunks for smoke, drip pan under bird with cranberry cocktail, herbed butter under the skin, lemons and herbs in the cavity and use a wired digital thermometer. Should take about 3 to 4 hours for a 10 or 12 pound bird.

  • No matter how you BBQ your turkey...Always! Without stuffing!

I always cook turkeys on gas BBQ, right up to 30lb. It is the best taste to it.
  • The best way I have found is to spatchcock the bird. (Google it)
You need a lot of surface area and I try not to have too hot of a fire.
The heat is too uneven to cook a whole bird.
  • Indirect heating.......coals banked on both sides with a drip pan in center under turkey

Venting set to hold 350*F----bottom vent wide open, top vent about 1/2 open

    Takes about 4- 4 1/2 hours for a 15lbr.

Add a few coals about 2 hrs in

Done it a couple of times......tent with aluminum foil after about 30 mins. or leave untented for a very crisp skin.

Check thigh meat with thermometer.....165*F then take off grill and let rest 20-30 mins.

    Edited for spelling
