Blueberry sting

We have 4 blueberry bushes we planted several years ago, and have had very little berries until this year. I've been very excited with our production this year. Went out to pick them after lunch, today and had a rude awakening. A big red wasp, nailed me good on my left arm. He was making a nest and I guess I got too close to his territory. I posted this as a reminder to check first and then pick. We have a little bottle of a product that's called sting eze, made the pain ease up. but it's very sore. But oh the berries are so good and fresh.
  • Ouch!
I went out to check my gooseberries today and was startled by a sudden rustling in the grass. I have to remember to take my hoe with me and rattle it around to scare off any snakes or other creatures.
  • Yep. We have some blueberry bushes, that we put in a number of years ago. Went to check them today. It's at that point that most aren't quite ready yet, but you have to keep a close eye so you get them before the birds find them.

When I see the price of blueberries in the grocery store, I'm glad we have the bushes. We generally get enough to enjoy some fresh, and freeze a few containers for over the winter.
  • Thanks for the warning.

This year my thornless blackberries appeared to have the first really big crop of berries. Went down to where they were a couple of days ago and the deer had eaten a couple branches and the birds had devoured their fair share of them.

Next year things will be covered with nets. We planted blueberries last year, but we picked the buds this year to give the bushes a chance to get bigger and stronger. I definitely plan to get those covered next year.
