Camping waffle iron

Does anyone use one of these? What is your technique? Thanks, terry r.
  • This is the one we have.

    http://www.amazon.com/Romes-1028-Chuckwagon-Waffle-Iron/dp/B001ASH9PA/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1395705536&sr=8-2&keywords=rome+waffle+iron

Have never used it over the fire or coals. Do have it seasoned though.

Just wondered what kind of luck people have had with it and their tips for using. terry r.
  • Coleman still makes one and it was rated 2nd best of all manual WI at Cook's Illustrated. Rome's was rated 3rd best and NordicWare came in first. Received the Coleman as a birthday present and haven't used it yet. It's a tad on the small side(only makes 2 waffles at a time and I really only do waffles for 4+ people) sooo it'll prolly get re-gifted to a single person,LOL.
  • When our daughter was in high school she loved waffles so we bought her a $20 electric waffle maker. The red light / green light made it so simple and they were great waffles. We are always with some kind of power so that would be the way I would go for making waffles on a camping trip.
  • I believe Rome still makes one. Google pie irons.
  • We have been looking at a cast iron waffle iron - two piece variety, but have only used them in the kitchen setting rather than in camp. Are you looking for something to cook over an RV range top or the campfire?
