Hard Boiled Eggs

It's been so long since I've hard boiled an egg I need help! IIRC, the time to cook was 3 minutes, but do you place the egg(s) in cold water in the pan or do you put them in after the water comes to a boil? Thanks..

BTW, I understand if you add a tsp of salt to the water it makes 'em easier to peel.
  • put a little salt in the water and they will peel much easier.
  • I live at 4300 foot level..........I have to let the eggs boil for 25 minutes before they're perfect. :) :) I mention this because I chuckle at the "boil for 3 minutes".....here, they'd be no more cooked than if they'd just come out of the hen. :) :)

put eggs in cold water, bring to boil, set timer for 10 minutes. Pour out hot water and replace with cold water and some ice cubes until cool. Works every time for me.

Ding ding ding, you win! The correct way.
  • You're serious??? They actually sell hard boiled eggs at Costco? I have never seen them. Are they near the fresh eggs? Will have to check it out. Even though I would normally cook my own, sometimes it would be nice not to have to stand over the sink to peel a couple dozen.
  • I don't "peel" eggs. :) :) I boil as above instructions. Then while hot, I pour out all water, add ice cold water (about 3/4-1" in pan, then I put the lid back on and shake shake shake shake. Sometimes some eggs don't peel, but 9 x out of 10, they peel themselves. :) :)
  • To answer the question about Costco....in our Costco and at least one other they are in the refrigerated section with the Yogurt....can't remember what else was in the case but the Yogurt sticks in my mind.

I bought a quisinart egg cooker (7 egg) and it was the best thing I ever bought for eggs.

Just put in an ounce or two of water per the measuring cup and flip the switch, the end.

Soft boiled hard boiled, they come out perfect and no watching.....just wait for the finish alarm.

Good suggestion but I rarely make hard boiled eggs, so I'll no doubt use the "old fashioned" methods suggested by the other posters...:)
  • While not boiled, but I still wanted to share because the end result is same as a boiled egg. I'm a pit master and get told I'm cooking for friends graduation, anniversary and birthday parties. Whenever I get started smoking whatever meats, I take, usually 2 dozen, eggs and put them on my big smoker at the far end from the firebox for about an hour or hour and a half.

You'll have to "sacrifice" one when you do it, until you get the hang of it. I learned quickly, so no doubt y'all will too. Peel them, and make whatever you'd like. There is a very small smoke ring on the peeled egg, and the white egg shells turn very brown in about 15 minutes or so.

Super cool to do, if people are around when you do it. I've been doing this for almost a decade and have had 3-4 people that have seen it before.

    Enjoy!!!!

And that is how we do it too>
  • !0 minutes doesn't work for us, but 13 does.
Eggland sold hard boiled eggs here for awhile. I suppose they weren't popular and were dropped by the stores or the company. They were handy for deviled eggs, they came 6 to a package and were perfect.
