Homemade Ice Cream

I haven't made ice cream in years as we didn't have a freezer & I wasn't going to pay the prices they were asking for them. Anyway, we recently got one at an estate sale and I'd like to see some tried & tested recipes!
  • my wife found one on clearance at wla mart in Yuma so she just got on line for some quick recipes.

Guess you didn't read my request for "tried and true" recipes. What you find online don't always work out like recipes that others have used.
  • I have one of those KitchenAid Ice cream attachments. You freeze the bowl and then let the mixer stir the ice cream until it sets up. Put the soft ice cream in the freezer to harden. Anyhow, the ice cream base that I use is the same, just the flavorings change. I will tell you that with the purchase of an ice cream maker, you will also gain an extra 15 lbs. free of charge!
    Strawberry Ice Cream:
3 cups of half and half
1 can of sweetened condensed milk
    1 tablespoon of vanilla extract
1 cup of partially thawed, frozen pureed strawberries, (or flavoring of choice)
Combine all the ingredients and chill. Place in ice cream maker and follow manufacturer's directions.
  • Mountain Mama, I have tried many of the recipes from this website. I have not had a bad one yet. Some of the ones that have been very big hits are, Old time vanilla, cherry vanilla, ultimate butter pecan, French vanilla bean, and chocolate flake.

I think the cherry vanilla and the ultimate butter pecan are my favorite. The Old time vanilla is a very good one to accommodate a crowd's different tastes.

  • I don't know about the recipes for the ice cream, but my grandparents added fresh peaches from their tree. It's a whole different flavor than store bought peach. This was also the crank in ice and salt maker, if that makes a difference.
  • I have made both of these simple recipes numerous times, &, always, well received.

ORANGE CRUSH or ROOT BEER ice cream
2 cans Eagle Brand sweetened condensed milk
    1 pint whipping cream
6 cans EITHER Orange Crush soda or Root Beer.
Mix sweetened condensed milk & whipping cream. Pour into a 1 1/2 gallon ice cream freezer. Add the soda pop. Process according to ice cream maker instructions. makes 1 1/2 gallon ice cream

    STRAWBERRY CHEESECAKE ICE CREAM
    3 C. sugar
    pinch of salt
    4 eggs, lightly beaten
    8 C. milk
1 pkg. (8 oz.) cream cheese, softened
    1 tsp. vanilla extract
3 C. mashed fresh or frozen strawberries
    2 C. heavy whipping cream
In lg. mixing bowl, cream together, cream cheese & sugar. Add eggs & milk slowly, to incorporate well. add vanilla & salt. beat. Stir strawberries & cream into the mixture. Pour into a gallon and half ice cream container. Freeze according to manufacturers directions.
Makes one and a half gallons ice cream.
Had not made this for several years, & decided to make it this morning. Discovered I'd made a mistake in the size of the freezer. BOTH recipes need a gallon & a half ice cream maker.
  • Hand crank is the best. We invested in one of these, https://www.lehmans.com/p-2815-lehmans-best-ice-cream-freezers.aspx
from Lehman's hardware, several years ago.

They were waaaaaay cheaper,then... hundreds cheaper. Looking at the price now, I would say we have an investment ice cream maker. It is built well enough to pass down to one of our kids. terry r.
