I owned a small appliance repair shop for 18 years. Fixed many an electric opener.
But, we have used for our 46+ married years a manual opener similar to the post #2 Ace Hardware, and the EZ-Duz-It.
The key to consistent performance is the set of meshing gears that the handle turns to turn both the cutter and the drive wheel.
Next is sturdy construction like those 2 and the Kitchen Aid and Farberware.
