If Ben Franklin had his way you'd be eating Eagle tomorrow!

Because the Turkey could have easily become our National Bird!

Ben Franklin opposed the elevation of the Bald Eagle to the United States Official Bird and symbol of America. In front of Congress and in his popular Newspaper he pitched and even had some support for the Nomination of the Turkey! He even wrote this letter to his daughter as well. So it's possible that shooting and eating a Turkey would be forbidded...after all it's the National Bird to 'ol Ben!

Franklin’s Letter to His Daughter (excerpt)...

“For my own part I wish the Bald Eagle had not been chosen the Representative of our Country. He is a Bird of bad moral Character. He does not get his Living honestly. You may have seen him perched on some dead Tree near the River, where, too lazy to fish for himself, he watches the Labour of the Fishing Hawk; and when that diligent Bird has at length taken a Fish, and is bearing it to his Nest for the Support of his Mate and young Ones, the Bald Eagle pursues him and steals it from him.

“With all this Injustice, he is never in good Case but like those among Men who live by Sharping & Robbing he is generally poor and often very lousy. Besides he is a rank Coward: The little King Bird not bigger than a Sparrow attacks him boldly and drives him out of the Forest. He is therefore by no means a proper Emblem for the brave and honest People of of America who have driven all the Kings "birds" from our Country!

Some how a "Stuffed Thanksgiving Eagle" with cranberrys just doesn't work for me!

Eagle..the OTHER white meat!

Fast forward to 2013. The Bald Eagle is the symbol of America.

And, Congress ie made up of mostly Turkeys.......

I wonder if Ben would be happy :@

    LOL agree
  • The idea he had did have some merit. The eagle is a scavenger. I doubt that had the turkey become the national bird it would have passed protection to the domestic variety.
Personally I've eaten wild turkey, the one on legs not the bottled variety, and its decent, but doesn't compare overall to a good domestic bird.
  • well, Ben was a pretty dirty guy himself. Not very good to his family back home when he was off cavorting in Paris. Not very kind to his common-law wife and daughter. Actually kind of neglectful and hard-hearted.

  • I get the feeling Ben did not like to eat turkey. Just a guess, but to me if I didn't like to eat turkey I would stop every one from eating turkey.LOL
