I have a Char-Broil Big Easy SRG (Smoker, Roaster, Grill) which is the next generation of the Big Easy. It a bit bigger, etc but it's still an infrared cooking machine. Works great on Poultry and just about any type of meat and I really like it for baked potatoes also. The SRG will hold a 25 lb turkey.

I prefer to never close the lid when cooking. Like anything else, you need to learn the capabilities of your pits. One cause of food looking burnt is too much sugar in the rubs/seasonings.

Here's a photo showing me roasting a 6 lb chicken and baking potatoes at the same time.

Probably. I haven't found any dependable time frame for browning except for watching close.

With that the bottom of the bird cooked fine...nice and brown all over.

At one time turkeys and the like tended to undercook at the very bottom portion in the basket. Raising the basket brought it back up into the high heat zone.
I was just curious. It was such a common complaint that they probably added some height to the legs. It didn't really deter from the overall quality of the unit because the fix was easy.

I'll be using mine for the first time with a turkey this Thanksgiving. Does anyone have any special seasoning tips?

we've had a Big Easy for about 3 years .... we enjoy cooking a pork loin in it more than we do turkey .... we take metal skewers and center it in the basket .... for us it has been one of those cooking appliances that is seldom used

Mine is several years old and the basket sets too low for everything to cook well on the bottom. This was a common complaint and most people have raised the basket 2 1/2-3". I put a springform pan in the bottom of mine, less the bottom of course.
This was such a common complaint I thought maybe they had added some height to the to basket by now.

By "everything" are you referring to have something like potatoes underneath the bird (or whatever you are cooking)?

With that the bottom of the bird cooked fine...nice and brown all over.
