- highlife4me1Explorer1 lg can Bush's Baked Beans
1 lb browned hamburger with an onion fried with it
4-6 slices fried smokey bacon crumbled
1/2 cup ketchup
1/2 cup brown sugar
2 T. worchestershire sauce
2 T. vinegar
salt and pepper to taste
Mix everything together and bake on low heat or place on grill until warm and bubbly. I've been known to have this for a meal all by itself, goes real good with a cold beverage. - MarshaNicholsExplorer

- pasusanExplorerI don't think anyone's mentioned using a crock pot... We use pork and beans for when we go out all day so that dinner is ready when we get back. We have a small crock pot like this:
just 1.5 qt since it's just the 2 of us (and it's small and we don't have lots of room). I put in 2 cans of pork and beans and a drained can of butter beans - add a little BBQ sauce and mix up a bit. Top with a couple chicken breasts or pork chops. Spread some BBQ sauce on top and let 'er go. - MarshaNicholsExplorerThanks, folks, for all the wonderful ideas...feel like I opened a can of...well, beans!! I wrote all your suggestions down and see common ingredients. I am going to do some "research" at home before my next camping trip. If I find the "Perfect Recipe" (although many of yours sound like it already), I will post it! Thanks again!! Marsha :B

Home made boston baked beans are nothing like the canned stuff. They're time consuming but easy to make. I make them for family gatherings and everyone loves them. This is how I make them:
1 lb. navy beans or Great Northern beans
1/2 lb. salt pork or bacon
1 onion
1/3 cup molasses
1/3 cup brown sugar
1 Tbsp. dry ground mustard
1 tsp. ground black pepper
1 tsp. salt or to taste
Preparation:
Pick over beans and soak over night.
Chop salt pork to 1/4 inch cube and slice onion. Layer 1/3 of beans then 1/3 of pork and onion, repeat and finish with layer of onion and pork
Combine the molasses, brown sugar, and mustard with 3 cup boiling water. Stir to dissolve the sugar and mustard and pour the mixture over the beans. Cover the pot or slow-cooker and cook the beans for 4 hours. Check on them, if the beans are tender to the bite, stir in the salt to taste. Cover again and cook for another 2 hours
I think I'll make this one for home! Thanks, sounds yummy! - MarshaNicholsExplorer

Drain all of the juice out of a can of pork 'n beans - push the lid down to get all of it out you can. Saute some chopped onions in a med. saucepan in a bit of oil for a couple of minutes, then add the drained can of beans, and about 2-3 tablespoons of brown sugar, 1/3 cup of ketchup, plus a teaspoon each of prepared mustard and BBQ sauce. Simmer over low heat for 15 minutes stirring often. You can make it tastier by frying the onions in bacon grease and crumbling the crisp bacon into the finished beans.
Oh my, this sounds good also!! - MarshaNicholsExplorer

My favorite ole standby is you always have a few cans of Pork N Beans on hand.
When i am by myself I usually stop by a WALMART just before heading into the campsite. I will pick up several (Kept Cold) pre-made hamburger patties.. These will keep a long time in a closed plastic lid container sitting on top of the ice in the 5-day ice chest.
For a real quick cooked hot meal is break up a couple of hamburger pattie in the skillet and heat for few minutes and then pour in a can of Pork N Beans and some cut up onions. Stir it all up until hot.
A very simple quick meal and tasty to me...
The last time I did this I standing over the Coleman burner under the awning stiring things up and two dogs from down the camp road was standing behind me wanting some... Must be good if the dogs want it too... They got some too...
The dog owner came up to get his dogs and he got some too...

My mom used to make "Hawaiian" Baked Beans. Bacon, onion, beans, brown sugar, ketsup and a small can of drained crushed pineapple. The ingredients can be varied to taste, for example I don't like as much onion. You also don't need as much brown sugar since the pineapple adds sweetness. You can prepare in a skillet or baked. She always got compliments and they were requested at pot luck dinners. If I had to guess at the measures, I would say 2 cans beans, 1/2 lb bacon, 1 small onion, 1/2 c brown sugar, 1/4 c catsup and the small can of pineapple. Brown the bacon, saute onion, drain off excess fat. Add other ingredients, simmer for 1/2 hour or bake at 350 degrees for 45 mins.
I like the sound of this one...pineapple, oh yum!! Thanks!! - MarshaNicholsExplorer
