Propane canister seal?

I would like to get a Weber Q1000 for the RV and plan to use the 16 oz. (or the 14 oz., if I can find these!)canisters. I've always used a charcoal grill so I'm not familiar with propane canisters. Do the canisters 'seal' themselves when removed from the connection on the grill? Or, can one get a cap to seal a partially-used canister? Is it safe to carry the canisters in a closed compartment?

Thanks for any information!
  • The disposable canisters have an internal valve that is designed to close once the canister is unscrewed from the gas fitting.

Rarely one won't close due to a valve imperfection or bit of dirt wedged in there. This happened to me once and I just right quick screwed it back on to the BBQ fitting, which was of course in the off position. Perfect seal! Transported it that way without issue and used it up at the next stop.
  • The 14 oz cylinders are available at almost any camping, hardware or wally world type of store. Most of the time I see 2 of them in a shrink wrap pack. Plenty safe to carry just try to pack them so they don't get banged around.
  • It's a good little RV grill. Rather than the disposable bottles, consider a refillable 1 gallon tank. Works great, light weight, saves money, easily stored, portable and with that grill, lasts a long time.

  • As said before, yes they seal themselves but they're not very reliable anymore. I've had so many slowly leak down that I'm just hooking the BBQ up to a bulk container instead.
  • yep. the Weber Q1000 is great. we just got a new one to replace our old worn out Weber.
  • I can barely find space for the Q1000 (have to remove the lid and carry the two parts separately), so carrying a propane tank is not an option; have to use the small canisters.

X2, and all you need is an adapter hose.
  • You might also consider a hose. It makes hook up very easy, just leave the hose attached to the grill.

I generally use a refillable tank as above, but I've seen brass caps for the disposable 14/16oz tanks, maybe from Campmor ? Something similar might be available at a good hardware store.

Edit - Campmor no longer stocks them, but Amazon, Sportmans Guide, Cabelas and eBay. Try googling disposable propane cylinder caps.
