Sour Dough

Good time of year to make bread, usually sour dough. The worst bread i ever made is better than store bought.Use a bread machine, cost about 40 cents a loaf.
  • I started baking my own Sourdough Bread several years ago. Began by mixing it by hand and then Patti had me get a KitchenAid, Professional 6000HD. Costco had a great price plus we used our rebate and did not have to pay much.
Now I do my bread and once a month make the bread for our Churches LORD'S Supper.....
Yep, this tastes better than store bought.
I am annal regarding flour so I use either King Arthur or Wheat Montana. Couple of times have used the CostCo Organic flour and it turned out well.....
  • check out Camp Cooks and Connoisseurs - all kinds of recipes.
There is a Sticky that has many recipes archived.

    including one for Rye bread!!
  • Has anyone got a good rye bread recipe? I'd need to use gluten free flour along with the rye flour...but I sure love rye bread!

You can get some dried starter from an original 1847 Oregon Trail start here, for free, or a donation if you care to make one. It works well, becomes a great starter, and I like the idea of it being living history.

Can't thank you enough, that's a great way to get started. Super information, especially for a beginner like me.

  • my ex still is useing the starter that her mother gave her 40 years ago love sourdough
  • Takes about 7 days to make a starter, mix bread flour yeast and water about like pancake batter.put a loose lid on it, every day add flour and water and mix. After a few days it will start to smell sour. Cheap, bread cost about 40cents. I use a bread machine. But have used the bread machine to make dough. At room temp feed it every day,in ref about every 3rd day.
  • Really want to get in this but am timid about it. Did you make your own starter? If so, how? If not where'd you get it? How long can you keep it (the starter)? Really want to try bread on our next trip, but that might in a couple of months, so I thought I'd practice at home. I want to use our Dutch Oven and charcoal if that matters.
    Thanks any and all help.
