Agreed, especially since the DO acts as an oven. There are plenty of multi-taskers that can be used to block the wind without having to buy an extra bit of baggage. The ice cooler is one way. The aluminum flashing I mentioned serves multiple purposes and weighs just about 2 ounces. If you're trying to pare back on the load and save space, items that multi-task are good to keep in mind.

The cover folds up. And goes inside the carry case I believe. On clearance shelf at my local CW for $14. Not hat big of investment to me.

Yup. The cover is handy in cold weather. But if you want to save $ you can always get some aluminum flashing and using clips, encircle the DO to block the wind and concentrate the heat. Cost is less than $5.

One thing I'll caution about the collapsible Volcano. Though sturdy, DOs with a heavy load will strain it after repeated usages. Again, common sense rules.

And as for storage, they say the volcano folds down to 5". On the videos it look a a little taller to me, but may not be. The Cobb I saw at CW was over twice as tall as that.

With the briquettes on top of the lid by itself with the grill cover, you lose a good bit of heat. Also, if you have any breeze going it's going to cause those briquettes on top to burn faster. The cover will act both as a wind block on those upper coals, but as swtgran mentioned, it keeps the heat inside making it more like a true oven. Sort of like putting a Dutch oven in the oven at home.

I would think the folding model wouldn't be too hard to store. Given the fact it would be a grill and allow the use of a DO on grass and such it should be hard to beat in those circumstances. I'm not sure you would need a lid with a dutch oven. I can't imagine the purpose.

magnusfide, hope to see you there and maybe they'll have the Volcano on sale as they did in Arkansas (sorry I didn't buy one then). Thank ya'll for the input. Now all I have to do is find the room in our B and convince the DW!!!
Are you camping at Walnut Acres? Is there any other campground around? We won't be able to make the entire weekend, but hope to make the last day (Sunday). By the time we can get there, the campground should be sold out. Any thoughts?
