camping ideas for Maine

We are planning a trip for a family of four plus dog to Maine from Ohio. Does anyone have any recommendations for campgrounds in Maine and how soon should we make reservations for summer 2014? Thx
  • What are your interests? Along the coast we like to go to Eastport, Camden Hills/Rockport, York, Sacaborough, Bar Harbor. When visiting away from the coast we like the Moose Head Lake area and Sabago Lake Region. If you go to Eastport, bring your passports so you can visit Campabello Island, Canada. We decide on where we are camping depending on if the grand kids come along. Check out whale/puffin watches and ride a schooner. Plenty of great moose watching areas in the Moose Head area.
Great outlet shopping in the Kittery area. LL Bean is in Freeport.
  • If going to Bar Harbor and Acadia we like: Smuggler's Den
It is a stop on the island shuttle route and has some great hiking trails accessible right from the back of the CG. Pool for the kids and a fairly new playground as well.
  • We also loved Bar Harbor KOA (though pricey). Don't miss the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens in Boothbay--just lovely. There is a post about that too.
  • We spent two weeks in Maine a couple of years back with our twin boys and another family with young children. We documented the trip extensively on our blog. Here is the first post which is a review of Camden Hills State Park, which we loved. I would definitely book early if you decided to stay there. There are many other posts and a review of the Bar Harbor KOA if you scroll up from the first Maine post. There are many great ideas in the blog for kid friendly activities. If you have any questions about what we did or where we stayed please ask.

  • Ditto to Shore Hills and Narrow Too. One of our favorites was The State Park in Camden. Enjoy! We made the trip from Ohio last fall. It was spectacular!
  • The Narrows Too RV Resort. Free shuttle stops at park and takes you into Acadia National Park. They have waterfront sites but are very expensive. If you get a back in site up near the road its much more reasonable. We selected a pull thru in the middle with a "peep" of water.
  • Moorings rv resort in Belfast ME ....book one of their waterfront sites. You may be too late already though...they go fast!
