4th of July

Please, again watch your pets during fireworks display. Sometimes they will jump the fence or slip their collar. Have your thundershirts, crates, meds,(if necessary) at the ready. Make sure they have a valid ID on their collar if they get away. Everyone stay safe!

  • We live on a lake, so fireworks are a problem for a week before and a few weeks after the 4th. Last year, Ben was just 10 weeks old, had quietly watched fireworks from our pontoon boat with us, and I thought we had another explosion-proof dog like Jimmy. And then 2 weeks later, some mental degenerate shot off a "mortar round" about 100' from our house JUST as we walked outside :-( Poor Ben was scared beyond words - screamed bloody murder. Yeah - it imprinted all right :-(

Fortunately, Ben isn't afraid of fireworks if he's in the house, so for several nights last week, he simply didn't go potty after dark. Last night it was raining and there was a fierce thunderstorm just north of us, so I took the dogs out for their pre-bedtime potty call. Ben stood and watched the lightning for probably 10 minutes, before he determined it was "just a thunderstorm" - and trotted off to do his thing....LOL!

I'm SOOOO thankful he can tell the difference. Of course having Jimmy remain totally calm no matter WHAT kind of noise is happening, helps too.
  • Good reminder!

I think we have every leash we own with us as we head to the lake. Our older dog is microchipped, but vet wanted to wait until six months on puppy. If it gets too intense Sandy (older dog) will go in the camper. Patches (puppy) seems unphased by fireworks so far.
