BBQ Chicken

So for a long time I have cooked chicken thighs in a crock pot for the dogs. Wondering if any thoughts on cooking over charcoal. No added smoke chips. Wife seems to think that is not a good idea but I have a big grill and can do a large amount at one time then freeze.

  • I grill for the dogs about every time I grill for us. I also buy frozen chicken breast from Sams and make chicken jerky for Lucky and Lucie. They seem to like it better than grilled chicken and they like it frozen for the added crunch as well. There are so many issues out there on store bought jerky we started doing this about two years ago. It is a little more trouble but running two dehydrators make it easier.
  • Thanks a lot! Now I know the reason why there were Amazon tabs open with BBQ grills on it, and why Calvin's been staring at me smile'in!

PS I use to cut up, boil then freeze chicken breasts for the kid/s.
  • Sounds like most agree with my way of thinking. I use a UDC (55 gal drum)to cook with and keep temps in the 225/250 F range and can do a lot of chicken at a time and freeze. We all eat pretty well from that.
  • I grill my food and the Collies of a summer time. I use to have a Collie (Neal) that would pull the grill over to the gate if I did not cook burgers on Sunday. I use a propane grill.
  • I would ask your vet. First I do grill. Second, I know that there can be health hazards resulting from grilling. I am not sure if charcoal and gas would be equal as far as the hazards. Your dog might not be able to take the same amount of toxins as a person can. I will continue to grill, but not for my dog. I used to grill for my dog though, but not well done.
  • I grill meat for my dog all the time and she loves it!
I'd sooner take the time and cook for her then feed her******from a bag.
  • Most of the BBQ bad things come from very high temps and fat flare ups (my understanding of the current info). Cooking at a reasonable temp will render out more fat than crock pot cooking, not an issue for dogs :B but good for people.

My opinion would be go for it.

  • that stuff they are talking about and the BBQ hazards,if it were true I'd be dead by now
  • While there has been some studies about the hazards of grilling foods, I tend to think most of is a lot of bunk. I would do it and not worry.
