Best dry dog food

We use Fromm 4-Star for our Lab. The 4-Star can be easily rotated without issues.

Most importantly I like that Fromm is still family owned, and has never had a recall.

I'd go by your Vet's recommendations...... but most of the dog food advertising is geared toward what we humans like..... we have used a Purina dry dog food for over 50 years with different dogs and give them very limited to no human food, all of our dogs have lived long lives.

Not all animals get nauseous with oral antibiotics, and a majority of those that do can eliminate the nausea when food is given with or before the antibiotic. But, there are some that have the nausea regardless.

Re the 10 day antibiotic shot, there are places where this is preferable especially when giving the antibiotic is impossible due to the animal's behavior. One thing to consider, if there is a reaction to the shot, the meds are in the dog/cat for 10 days, there is no way to eliminate it. With a pill or oral Rx reaction, the 1/2 life is hours and the drug is usually out of the body within a day or two.

re: dogs not eating when they're on oral meds. Especially that awful pink liquid, amoxicillin or whatever it is. Years ago, vets would give an antibiotic shot, which was so much easier. The dog would not connect medicine with an upset stomach. A few years ago, Rosie had a vet emergency on the road (tore a toenail out of her foot) and the small town vet gave her a "ten day antibiotic shot." Yay! No risking the dog puking up pink stuff in a moving RV. Maybe Dr Doug can tell us why those shots do not seem to be as available these days. I understand the desired reduction in needles, but sometimes when stomach upset is involved, it sure would be easier.

Kirkland (Diamond) had a recall for Salmonella in 2012.

X2..That's what I feed our three dogs including boiled chicken & rice mixed in. Our Pit has had periotic "growling" stomach for years and we have tried everything. I'm now a label reader and Costco ingredients are better than even the expensive Vet food. He's now on a supplement powder, Canine Enteric Support by Standard Process with a Metoclopram pill with the evening meal. His problems seem to develop overnight. That worked for a couple weeks but he's had two bouts in about ten days. When his stomach growls he won't eat a thing, including London broil but otherwise he's a "lick the bowl clean" eater. Tests for the problem includes X-rays and a sonogram of his intestines. It's great that nothing was found wrong but it still doesn't solve his discomfort. I told the wife I was going to trade him in for a potted plant but she didn't think that was very funny :W

Update on gunny's condition,after the first vet visit we took her the next day to the emergency animal hospital where she had X-rays and more blood work ,all that did was eliminate things no idea of what the problem is . She was sent home with an antibiotic to take twice a day and advice on what to feed her. She absolutely would not eat anything ,so a call to the vet was made and was advised to stop the meds for one day,which I did and she immediately started eating ( Hamburg and rice ) gave her her meds and no eating again . So I stopped the meds and she is eating , stools are runny ,but no blood. This is where I'm at today .

Please remember as you are switching from one dry dog food to another, to make the switch over gradual to avoid starting another episode of stomach upset or loose stools. Start with a old food to new food ratio of 80/20 and over the course of at least a week, gradually increase the new food ratio.

The tip on adding raw pumpkin to dry dog food is a very good one. Any canned raw pumpkin will do, about 1/2-1 cup.. Adds great natural fiber.
Our chocolate lab has corn allergies. He does great on 'Taste of the Wild' dry. It is available at our Farm and Garden store and I know Tractor Supply in our area carries it as well. His coat is beautiful.

Go with whatever your vet recommends for the animal. This would take into account age, breed and any special considerations.
