Breed Discrimination?

We too try to educate about the breed. I find that people that are dog people don't seem to have much issue. I find that some of the non dog people are the ones that are the problem. This may be because they buy into what the media is saying.

To Shelby everyone and everything is a potential friend. Last week she met two more friends on our daily walk.

I have known some that think they will rip your face off. I have said come and meet my dog and you will have a little different view of the breed. No one has ever taken me up on the offer.

I think with people there is a bad apple here and there, the same goes for dogs.

All that I ask of people is please don't judge my dog based on what you read and hear.

Its funny that my dogs picture suddenly starts getting quoted again this weekend when it was this weekend where I had a group at a campsite near me just fall in love with Gus (I get that a lot) and they all had to come out and pet him as soon as they seen he was friendly to the first brave soul to walk up and start petting him. I just told them not to all rush at once or he could feel trapped and not like it very much. Everyone took turns and just couldn't believe how much of a big baby he was. All of a sudden I see one coming back with a yapping little Boston Terrier. " Oh this little guy wants to visit too" I respectfully declined stating that he loves people and cats but I don't like to take chances with strange dogs. They were understanding and thought it best to not take the chance as well as they would obviously ended up with the biggest loss if it didnt go well.

I think the breed, as a rule, is notoriously "not strange dog friendly". When I adopted Jack (Red Heeler), I took him to the vet with my 2 Aussies. As all 3 stood together, the Vet assistant Jeff walked by, did a double-take, then yelled back at the Vet "There's a Cattle Dog standing here with 2 other dogs and nobody's BLEEDING yet!!!!" They both laughed and explained that as large-animal vets, they stitch up more stray-dogs-dumped-at-farms who get attacked by the resident Cattle Dog than any other injury...

I took Jack to obedience classes, socialized him to death with all my grand-dogs, he traveled every one of the 48,000 miles on our Class C and I still never trusted him around strange dogs. The best I ever achieved was having him know that aggressive behavior was totally unacceptable while on the leash. Had he ever gotten off his leash and encountered some ferocious, massive and angry dog - would Jack have bitten it? Oh surely as the sun rises... (rolling my eyes)

BUT: they are awesome with humans :-)

Glad to see the last couple of posts about not all dogs being friendly with other dogs. My blue heeler is one of those. We have had her in training but it didn't do a whole lot. We are just careful when outside. She likes people and absolutely loves children and has been great with our grandkids. It is just other dogs she has a problem with.

I read about a yellow ribbon movement where the yellow ribbon on the leash means doesn't play well with others. I put it on her leash but I must be the only one who read that article. Even when I move away, many people chase us to let their dogs say hi. I have to ask them to stop and explain that she is onery to other dogs. Don't know what else to do.

NOW don't go and get up in arms. I'm not implying that your dog is like that by any stretch of the imagination.

But when you say 'Pit Bull, Rottie, Dobie' the above image is what folks conjure up in their minds.

And YET Dalmatian brings to mind a tail wagging happy firetruck partner. Which is BS. I've owned 2 Dalmatians.
Both where great family dogs..loving 'velcro' pets.
NOT so friendly to outsiders/other dogs!

We travel with a American Staffordshire Terrier and have been asked once to leave a RV park because of our dogs breed. Despite the fact that we had been going there for 3 years, new management. Most people once they meet our dog end up being ok with her as she is fine with all dogs and works with kids as a therapy animal. That said many breeds get prejudged by appearances and any dog can act aggressive. One place we go to has a dog policy but I faxed over my dogs behavior assessment paperwork from her therapy group and the owner approved her. Her picture is on their website now, breed ban and all go figure. Parks have bans but I highly doubt the irresponsible dog owners are running around in motorhomes visiting RV parks with their dogs, this is pushed by insurance companies feeding off media hype. Also owners need to understand not every dog wants to meet your dog. Remember adopt don't shop too!

I can't help but notice some rottie love going on here.

I will try and stay away from any park with any type of pet restrictions. We are now with our second rottie. I almost did not get another one because of the grief we were given by some people. Then I though nope I'll get another and continue to show that they do not typically eat every child they see. The park we spend a lot of time at has a picture of my rottie on the wall right behind the counter. They absolutely love her.

I know this isn't a rottie picture thread but...........

Here she decided to put on my wife's sweater. Yes she did this by herself. Her head is through one of the sleeves.

I love rotties!! A friend had one 20 years ago - biggest, most lovable lump on a log!! "Ladybug" thought she was a lap dog! I miss that dog!
