Buddy's getting his teeth cleaned

I just had my 13.5 year old Collie Lassie, teeth cleaned. I have all my Collies teeth cleaned once a year.

I have to give you an update:

Buddy Blue is doing FANTASTIC! I can tell he feels 100% better! Honestly, I didn't know his teeth were in such bad shape. He now wants to play and he no longer has VBDB (very bad doggy breath)!
When he smiles...his teeth are white. We have a whole new dog, honestly it's taken years off.

It makes me want to cry...I was slowly killing my baby.

Never waiting again...Duncan is next. He's a youngster, but better safe than sorry.

Good to hear your doggie is home and getting pampered.....I agree with needing a DVM that I feel good about...we have a fellow about 30 minutes away but would not take a dying snake to him...he is abrasive, treats owners like idiots etc. Now having said that, he is a surgical genius especially with orthopaedics....but having him call me " stupid " for having chihuahuas after Newfoundlands was the breaking straw for me..we drive 75 minutes to a clinic where they treat animals and owners with respect and caring concern .
As to cost...we pay $1000 - 1400 depending on age to start for a dental and then the price goes up if extractions are needed...add on another procedure and the price would be well over $2000 +...so hopefully this makes your bill not sting quite so much LOL

I like warm and fuzzy with a vet, sorry....but if what I hear are short, curt answers and a snarky attitude I will not continue with this vet.

Compassion and the willingness to talk to you and answer your questions, you know, have a conversation with me! That's important to me.

Of course if he/she is incompetent then all that goes out the window but it has to be in addition to it.....

Glad Buddy is home and feeling better. This teeth cleaning annually is brand new to me with the toy dogs. Some need it almost every single year.

I just had to have my 14 year old done and I was on pins and needles also. But when he recouped from the dental cleaning he felt like he was 10 years younger I knew I had done the right thing!! Previcox IMHO is nothing short of a miracle med.

My 14 year old has 2 discs one in his neck and one further down the spine that are shot in his back and 10 years ago the vets gave him a year to live at best before we would have to put him down.

I mas in Florida when he went downhill and the vet there prescribed first Rimadyl which did absolutely nothing, then he prescribed the Previcox, 1/2 pill every night. What a diff, within a day he was back to normal!

Now he is down to "one" pill, "once" a week. He feels like a pup and runs all over at 14 1/2. Compared to the others this one works within hours. If he fly's off the couch and pinches that disc I give him one pill and within a couple of hours he's back up and off running.

So glad he is home and recuperating. As Dr. Doug said, the vet's bedside manner is no indiction of aptitude, but your relationship with him/her is important. We love our vet and his clinic has taken care of all our loved ones and with each serious case, we received compassion and understanding. When Dr. Schulz had to put our beloved Champ down, he shed tears with us. All the vets that work for him are as good. I would agree to retest later to check those levels.

thanks Doc. I am not worrying about it until we get him re-tested in a couple of weeks. She does recommend waiting until he's not stressed.

He has no other symptoms of Cushings other than the enzyme and thirst. His weight is perfect. I think it has more to do with his raging infection from his teeth. Once we get it treated completely, he'll be right as rain.

Shopping for another vet as soon as this issue is closed.

Previcox is an nsaid, good for post-op pain, arthritis, etc.

I don't send every tumor to a pathologist, but if there is any doubt I'll try to convince it's worth the added expense.

While warm fuzzy relationship isn't necessarily an indication of good medical care, it's difficult to effectively communicate with someone you don't have some sort of rapport. That communication is necessary for effective medical care.

There are so many things that can cause mild elevation of liver enzymes, many are not serious. In the absence of symptoms, I usually recommend re-testing rather that immediately trying to chase down cause.

Whenever we have had a lump removed it has been sent for testing with the exception of a couple of fatty tumors but even then I was asked if I wanted it tested. I would usually leave the decision up to my vet in that case.

Don't know where you are right now but I know I would find another vet. Being short, rude or snarky is the last thing I want in a vet.

Cushings...she didn't elaborate on that bomb.

I don't know but I don't get a warm and fuzzy feeling about this vet at all.

But on a happier note your baby is home and I'm sure groggy but happy!
