I HATE this. Arrived at work this morning to find a dog sleeping by the back door at work. He's clearly a young adult, black lab/pit mix; neutered; and has been wonderfully cared-for. He's fit, with a shiny coat and trimmed nails - and just the nicest dog ever. Has a collar - no tags. Greeted me like a long-lost friend; and once he heard Jimmy and Ben whining to get out of the car, he stood by with no aggressive body language, so I let them out. They sniffed and marked and happily did "dog-stuff" together.So now Mr Nice Guy is sleeping in the rear part of our building. How he got here? Was it the terrible storms last night that drove him here; or did somebody drop him off? Either way - I can't keep him. I don't want another dog - and quite frankly, his dark and powerful appearance might scare my customers. So I'll be driving him to our local shelter this afternoon. I've taken his picture and will be putting posters at the grocery, I posted "Found Dog" on Craig's List, etc telling his owners where he is. At least he'll be safe. For now.

Oh, I hope this guy finds a good home or his family. Maybe someone will see your posts on Craigs List, etc and contact the shelter that this is their dog.

PLEASE be careful about posting on Craigslist!!! Many dog fighters get bait dogs from there (free to good home or under $100). Make sure if someone answers the ad that it is the owner by some type of identification of the dog (pictures of them together, identifying scars or color markings).

Get their Vet's number and both look up to see if the Animal Hosp actually exists and the phone numbers match - and CALL them! Craigslist is trawled by all kinds of people from animal thrill-killers to common flippers.

And AWESOME news - his mom just called. They had just moved to a new house - she thinks maybe he was trying to go "home"? So now poor "Ninja" will have to spend an extra day at the shelter - but at least he's safe and will be reunited with his family!!!!

Yep, that's what I suspect, Ike had a paw in it. That or maybe it's the flashing neon *SUCKER* sign that some of us have in our immediate proximity.:B Either way, job well done and I hope you get to hear that Ninja made it home again. Maybe the intake clerk at the shelter will have to rethink her assumptions.

That's what is weird about Ninja choosing our place: it's a car lot. With a business across the street and one next door. Nothing about it would seem "homey" - nothing there offered him protection from the terrible storm we had Friday night (unless he crawled under a truck?). Of course, being a dog, he would be aware that other dogs frequent the place....

Of course, up on that Rainbow Bridge, there's a HUGE Aussie who was always the "protector of lost and wayward things". Maybe Ninja heard a voice that said "Hey Buddy - I can show you where to get help"? ;-)

Where I live if you call Animal Control and tell them you've found a stray they come out and retrieve it for you. You may have to wait for them to come get it, but they do come. If there's a collar and tag, I'll call and coordinate the "reunion" myself. I live in a suburb, but it's a very quiet neighborhood and I'm at the end of the cul-de-sac. It seems it's a stray dog magnet though!

I agree - I mean, I'd have happily paid twice that to reunite a nice dog with his family. But I can see how a LOT of people would NOT have made the huge drive nor paid the fee.... and I sort of got grilled by the lady in the office (during the 20-minute process of surrendering him): I got the impression she thought he was mine??

That's because "back in the day" the shelters charged a fee if owners surrendered their own pet, but not if it was a stray they brought in. So naturally, everybody "just found" the dog or cat they were dropping off, even if they'd had him for ten years. Sad, really, and unfair, but the shelters had to do something to cover expenses.

Ninja was so smart, choosing exactly the right location to seek help. You "done good" and it would be nice if they repaid you the $25, but if not, just think of it off as a donation to the shelter. I sure hope the owners get him tags. Good job=good karma. Nice that your boys accepted him so well, too. :B
