My Zachery wasn't a particularly picky eater but seemed to be more so after the diabetes diagnosis.
He especially did not really care for his breakfast and he too needed to eat twice a day.
In the five years that we dealt with the diabetes Zachery did not have one single meal that wasn't augmented with some form of protein.
I would cook up chicken or even steak and cut in very small pieces and mix with his dry food or even his prescribed wet food.
Sometimes I would add a little brown rice and some cooked broccoli.
In other words I did whatever I could to insure he would eat.
His last couple of years I also gave him snacks in the middle of the day, usually either his diabetic cookies or even a piece or two of chicken (protein).
