"The new regulation, part of the FDA’s Food Safety Modernization Act, would require for the first time that companies that make pet food and animal feed follow good manufacturing practices that encompass basic issues such as sanitation and hazard analysis."
In other words, they're suggesting manufacturers DO, what most of us naive folks have assumed was being done all along?? (smack forehead)
And at the risk of sounding cynical (who, me??) I'm finding that a lot of these regulatory agencies are far better at writing proposals and creating "studies", than in actually going out and solving the problem..... - dturmModerator

So true, but the people saying "this is the one" are the media types that read a scientific article and make the leap in interpretation. So often if you go back and read what was really said, the actual paper says there is an association - NOT cause. - Code2HighExplorerGood luck to the FDA getting help from people dense enough to still be feeding their dogs that garbage. My dogs would definitely get Doritos before they'd get any of that jerky stuff, because it is impossible to say who made what, where, or what they may have put in it. Dogs will eat and enjoy anything, as others have mentioned. I've used tortillas in a pinch.
And keep in mind that you, too, have an oven and you can dry all kinds of things in it. Chicken, beef, sweet potatoes.... I used to do bagels when I had them left over. Anything you'd give your dogs can be put in on the lowest setting and dried to jerky. Meat that's properly cooked first will have no risk of e-coli or salmonella. Boil up some chicken and spread it out on a pan and guess what? It will turn into bits of jerky treats!
For the lecithin thing, before you get all wound up about it, keep in mind that this is about the twentieth time that "they" have claimed that they "know" what substance "causes" heart disease.
If the police came out with different suspects for the same crime, one after the other, and said "no, really, this is THE ONE" every time, how long would you keep believing them?
I'm all for scientific inquiry, but take what they tell you with a grain of salt. This is the same discipline that had people giving up butter for decades, in favor of "healthy" margarine full of trans-fats. - CroweExplorerThanks, Pawz, for the links.
I read the posted articles about lecithin waste-products linked to rates of heart disease. It appears that there was one study done in the US. I missed where the French were also included in this study.
Can't seem to locate it at this point. May have been a separate study with a reference to the US. Point was we often look at the wrong thing to determine a cause and effect relationship and overlook something that is a contributing factor because it's either too obvious or doesn't make sense.
This is ridiculous. Let's wait and see what happens when Chinese rvs come to the U.S., how many people will buy them. And they talk about China bombs (tires). Back stabbers.
You need to layoff the Starbucks, dude. What Mickee D's and BK do aren't relevant here. It was merely a point. - qtla9111Nomad

This is what China sold to their own humans, can we honestly believe they care about what they ship to the USA for dogs?

And herein lies all the problems regarding imports.

You really have something against the Chinese. How easily we forget all the incidences of e-coli in U.S. meat recalls, McDonald's and Burger King selling other meat disguised as beef, now the chicken nuggets. Oh I guess, you're right, eating veins disguised as meat it is still chicken.
If people hate it so much, stop buying it. Go to Washington. Oh wait, was that a joke?

Do please note:
When I advise avoiding processed foods altogether, this of course presumes an automatic exception for Doritos and other representatives of the "treat" Food Group. ;) - Go_DogsExplorerBINGO!!!
- Francesca_KnowlExplorerWhile we're waiting for you-know-where to freeze over, releasing a flood of money to the FDA:
A simple first step to protecting oneself is to avoid processed foods altogether- that's where most of the mystery ingredients are. And I don't care if the label says "organic" or "natural", either.
There are few things more "natural/organic" than your garden variety pathogen! - rockhillmanorExplorer II
The FDA can only do what they are authorized to do and funded to do. You want more inspections then give the FDA more funding = pay more taxes.
I'd gladly pay more taxes and then some, to ensure better food safety to avoid getting sick!
