Had to take Mikko to vet (update 4/9/14) K-State Diagnosis

I took Mikko to K-State because his leg was not any better.

Avulsion fracture of the proximal epiphysis of the 5th metatarsal bone (right forelimb) Moderate to severe degenerative joint disease (osteoarthritis) of the right forelimb carpal joint.

We recommend that Mikko undergo surgery to fuse the bones of the carpel joint of the left forelimb (partial carpal arthrodesis). This is a salvage technique as plates will be used to fuse the bones of the carpal joint and permanently restrict movement. This would help repair the fracture and slow the progression of osteoarthritis in that joint.

The estimate for surgery would be $2200-2500. Please schedule an appointment at your earliest convenience.

Mikko is sleeping of the sedation out in the shed where it is cool and quite. away from the other Collies.

Poor Mikko, hope he heals fast and that's all there is to it!

Well daggone it, his size is probably going to make it even more difficult to heal. At least he is past the rambunctious puppy stage. Is he taking to the restricted activity okay? I agree, that shed sounds pretty darn cozy. :W

Will be keeping Mikko in my thoughts and prayers as well as you. Hoping for positive results and please keep us posted on how things are going.

Hope poor Mikko feels better soon. It's bad when you can't go about your normal activities, and even worse when you're a dog and don't understand why you are being kept from them. Give that handsome collie a hug from me, and Andy sends good wishes for a speedy recovery.

Sorry to hear about poor Mikkos fracture...it's never easy when you have to put them on activity restrictions...I know cause I'm dealing with that also ( smile )
By the way that shed sounds pretty darn comfy !

No wrap on Mikko's leg. Mikko is about 8 years and a 94 lb Collie so not so little, he's tall enough to rest his head on the dinning table.

I had a cast, ankle to knee, for two months. It was a hairline fracture of the fibula, which I think is the shin bone. I had twisted my ankle and then fell on it. Yeah, it sure would be nice if dogs/cats could tell us what happened but luckily, vets are good at figuring it out. Did the doc put vet wrap on Mikko's leg or anything to remind him to favor it? How old is Mikko? Poor little guy. :(

Vet and I visited about how a human can tell what they did Mikko not so. He does hate squirrels but no porch just patio. You can tell it really hurts, I wish I could do more.

To add insult to injury he had a dental while at the vet.

The Vet said NO stairs so I shut the door to downstairs and all 3 Collies slept upstairs (did not want to single out Mikko).

None of us are happy about it. I joked with my sister We all need to sleep in the shed (no stairs except for the loft). It is heated and A/C with a tv and surround sound.
