It's THAT weekend again :-(

I've been praying for rain every evening, to cut down on the number of fireworks lit, to no avail. We live on a large lake, so it's a nonstop barrage of fireworks for weeks (until all the corner fireworks tents disappear again).

I'm lucky that Ben is just "scared" of fireworks - on a scale of 1 to 10 (out-of-their-skulls-terrorized) - he's about a 6. But I've known other dogs who just suffer miserably during the 4th of July holiday. Our "big" fireworks show is Saturday night - Ben will be taking an herbal "doggie downer" to take the edge off. Otherwise, we just make sure his last potty break is before sunset. Jimmy, bless his heart, is unfazed by explosions; and I think that helps Ben, too.

So I'll say a little prayer for all the fireworks-frightened pets. Also remember that this is when scared dogs might run off - make sure your dog has ID!

  • Fireworks are also unnerving for folks who have been in the military too.

I was once at a grocery store, coming out carrying my groceries in a bag. Behind the grocery store was the high school foot ball stadium. I was not part of that school system, but when they fired the cannon at the beginning of the opening ceremonies, I went "splat!" on the ground, groceries when flying every where, and folks were standing there wondering what just happened. I regained my composure, stood up, started collecting my groceries and everyone just stared at me like I was nuts and walked on.
  • Me too. Of the four dogs I have, one is going on 20 and one is 16. So their hearing, god love them, is pretty low on the scale. So I don't have to worry about them anymore regarding the fireworks.

But we are all in luck were I am in Florida right now. Our towns big fireworks display was just cancelled!!!! YEA!!

Chamber of Commerce just found out that the contractor they hire to put the display on forgot to get his permit submitted in time. Sooo, ahhh, no fireworks this year. I'm lovin' it. :C
  • Americans using fireworks on the Fourth of July is tradition in our country. Yes to responsible use but I am not an "imbecile" for celebrating our independence with fireworks nor is any other responsible user.
  • Agree with both of you....we hate them, as does our dog.
We are going camping to a state park on the beach where fireworks are not permitted to escape the "war zone."

Downside is that we also are not fond of camping on the zooy 4th holiday.
    Life is full of compromises.
  • My mother who is 92 and lives with us has dementia. She cries every time some imbecile shots off fireworks. She doesn't understand whats happening. Your right it's going to be a looooooong weekend.
