Every morning when I let the dogs out to do their business before I leave for work, Jesse chases the squirrels. As soon as I open the slider, the gray squirrels dive off the feeders and head to the trees. However, we have one little and I mean LITTLE red squirrel who is the most defiant critter I've ever seen in my life. Well, he stood his ground a bit too long this morning and Jesse was just about to chomp him when he leaped onto a tree trunk and scooted up. Hope this little guy learned his lesson!

I always knock on the back door and wait a few seconds before letting the dogs out. Gives the critters a bit of a chance. They DO learn.....at least most of them!

Our two Draathars double teamed. One would district them, while the other snuck up from behind. I can't tell you how many I saved but calling the dogs. For the few that didn't survive, they must've broken their necks or the squirrels died of fright because there were no visible puncture wounds. But my female would do the same with mice. She'd catch them and I'd come home to find her throwing something in the air, catch it, throw it again. Upon closer scrutiny, I'd see it was a mouse! A wet alive, mouse!

My dog brought home dinner for us on Monday, a little bunny. Not sure how he caught it as he is one of laziest dogs I've owned. Dropped it at my feet with a proud look on his face.

My boxer and westie mix almost caught a chipmunk

Hubby had boxers growing up. When we started dating he had a big, hulking male name Brutus. This dog could fly off the deck, scream across the yard, and catch a chippie in a matter of nanoseconds. It was amazing to watch.

My Lab has caught two voles in the last week. One was missing its head and the other was still warm when I saw that she was playing with something in the yard. I thought they were mice with short tails, till I looked them up. Explains it all since I've had tunnels in my flower beds and lawn that I thought were from moles, yet there were openings - holes, and I was pretty sure moles don't do that. Anyway, she hasn't presented us with a vole this week, yet.

My boxer and westie mix almost caught a chipmunk the other afternoon that panicked and made the mistake of streaking across open ground in my back yard. If I hadn't screamed at the dogs to stop and run out there to intervene, I think they may have caught him/her. Ugh - I don't want to find out what would happen if they did catch one of these feisty creatures. I'm worried they'd get all scratched up, and I don't need yet another vet bill...

We once lived on 10 acres covered with mature Oaks spaced appx 50 feet apart, hundreds of squirrels
My Rottie mix was about 1yo when she learned that the squirrels would zig zag as they ran. She just ran in a straight line and snatched them up as they went past.
She never knew what to so with them once she caught them so she just spit them out.
Our outdoor cat each night left a dead creature on the front porch for us.

Our old Jack Russell used to catch the squirrels all the time. A couple of bites, and they were toast! At 19 yrs, she was rather slowed by arthritis, but still kept them on notice. I lost her 3 years ago to failing kidneys, and she was both deaf, and failing eyesight. Our current three, are Queensland Heeler/German Shorthair mix, and Coyote/Border Collie mix. NO ONE, and I do mean NO ONE gets by them!!

Okay, this has been a calm thread way too long. Time to stir things up. Most folks have way too many squirrels and they are not an endangered species anywhere I know. So this is a great game and exercise motivation for the canines. So what if a few of them get chomped? They are rodents for Pete's sake just live rats and mice! Pests that chew vehicle wiring causing thousands of dollars of damage each year. Let the dogs at them and may the best runner win!

I bet once up in the tree he was sticking out his tongue.

LOL but I'm not so sure. Just a light tap on the glass of the slider sends him scurrying!

My six month old Corgi snatched a Robin out of the air Sunday. I stood there with my mouth wide open. Granted the Robin swooped down but I didn't have a clue that my little 11" tall dog could move that fast or jump that high.
