Neurois

OK, I'm an incurable dog nut. I sometimes fantasize but not in reality. Our latest adoption was a 100# Rottweiler. It's been over a year but it's been obvious she had a good home and still remembers. I read an article where dogs are neurotic caused by a traumatic experience, possibly the loss of their home. She came to us as a stray and after about a month of trying to find her home, I wrote our phone number on her color. She had a new home but it was obvious she wanted me to take her back to her "home". No ID. Her pleading brown eyes made me feel guilty that I didn't know how. She has accepted us as her home and is super loyal and protective of our property.
The article I read said a dog that was stressed, neurotic, would lick their paws. She does this. She would stop when I told her to not lick her foot and looks at me with sad eyes, but with my new education I laid beside her and talked to her. She changed to licking my hand then took a nap. I will no longer just tell her to not lick her foot. It's a sign of mental stress. She remembers.. IMO..
I know that 99% of the folks here are dog nuts but I think many of us, though our dogs are rotten spoiled, may not totally understand them. This Rotti is the saddest of the three strays we've adopted. The other two appeared to not have a decent home if any.. She's having a hard time forgetting her other home, even after a year.. It's obvious she's happy but there's something in the back of her memory that's just not right...Our pets are thinking, feeling beings, not potted plants....FWIW, from a dog wacko..:)

Hell, I'd do well with a good neck massage....:)
One thing she finally taught me. She would ram her head between my legs and just stand there. Sometimes not too gentle. I finally got smart. She wants a back rub. Now that I learned the program, the ramming is more frequent. She must think humans are slow learners but she never gave up...
I must thank you folks. I thought my wacko ideas would bring comments that I was "smokin' sumpthin". It used to be the thought that animals ran on instinct, not having the power to think. I don't read that anymore. When I tell our Pit something, a new command, not repetition training, he understands.... Example...Call Lady, tell her to come in the house. He scans the yard, When she shows up, he's proud as hell. He did it.. Don't tell me dogs can't communicate mentally... This is why I consider myself a dog wacko. I'm retired and have the time to thoroughly pay attention to our pets.. They are not potted plants.. They are teachers.. It's fun..
  • Potted plants live, breathe, react to being talked to & hearing music......and just because you can't hear them they scream when being yanked out of the pot.

Our old hound licks her left front paw.......she has arthritis and it soothes her so I don't stop her from doing it unless it goes on and on and on.
  • You're not "wacko" and she seems to be able to clearly communicate with you. Maybe you should tell her that you don't know where she lived - and she'll have to stay with you now. Forever. Maybe she's just wondering when she's going to be looking for the next home?? My daughter adopted a Chow/Golden mix, and it took him a LONG time to accept them as "his" family.
  • Dogs can lick their paws for lots of reasons. It can be an OCD type behavior, sort of like nail biting or hair twirling in people. Those are often triggered by stress or anxiety, but then they simply become a self-soothing habit. Paw licking can also be due to boredom, nerve irritation, allergies or a reaction to pain (like arthritis). My guess is that when allergies aren't an obvious cause, it's most frequently due to boredom.
  • Our Rat Terrier, Stella Luna, licks her paws when her nails need to be trimmed. Are you a dog nut? Possibly, but more than likely you are a caring, observant person who truly tries to understand where your dog is coming from so that you can make the right decisions for him/her. Congratulations on being a fine human being!
  • Amen to "they are not potted plants". We had a rescue that did that. He did stop after awhile, but I wish I would have known at the time why he did that.
