5er, Dish & Hopper

Hi Folks,

I currently have an auto sat on the roof of my 5er, when I take the 5er out, I just take the Dish Hopper out of my house and put in in the 5er and everything is good. That being said, I’ve never been out of Arizona with the 5er so I’m wondering what will happen with the Hopper when I do. Heading to Oregon in a couple of weeks. Anyone know if the Hopper will still work? What program guide will it download? Will I still get the AZ programs?

Thanks for any help in advance,

Mark

You should add that PTAT (Prime Time Any Time) will not work at the same time as DNS (Distant Network Service).

I have a Hopper with DNS service. Note that the DNS channels use DISH's Western Arc (WA) sats. My current local network channels are on both DISH's Western Arc and Eastern Arc (EA) sats -- this situation doesn't happen often.

Anyway, I'm in a location where I can use both WA or EA sats, so I can use PTAT and DNS -- just not both at the same time.

    It's a kludge, but at least it's a choice.
  • That is correct. Dish does not care where the Hopper is. However, they cannot control the loss of Network programming. That's going to happen as you move and it cannot be prevented. As long as you have also have the Dish Solo Node switch added to the Trav'ler then everything else will work and you could even bring a client to put in another room if a coax runs to that location.
If you do not have the Solo Node switch installed you will be able to watch all of your channels but you will not be able to use all of the tuners or activate the PTAT feature.
By the way, in case someone mentions the DNS option, the PTAT option does not work with DNS.
  • Ok, thanks. That's the info that I needed.

So Dish don't mind moving your location? Even though the Hopper is really supposed to be in the house (I just take it out of the house and put it in the 5er when we camp).
  • What kind of auto antenna do you have and was it modified to receive all of the Dish programming? Open face antenna? Dome? Do you have a Solo Node installed in the RV?
These will answer operational questions. Dennis is right about the Network programming. There is no way to receive AZ programming once you leave the spot beam (usually several hundred miles) but you can call Dish and have your location changed so you can receive the Networks at your new location. While traveling it's likely going to be easier to use your OTA antenna for the Networks and your Hopper for everything else.
  • Don't have a Hopper, but it should be no different than the VIP612 DVR. You will lose your local programs since they are on a spot beam. Everything else will stay the same.

If you are staying in one area for a while you can call Dish and change your SERVICE location. That will get you the locals where you are located. Only ill effect will be loss of any home location sports channels. For example we get CSN (Chicago Sports Net). When we travel we lose the locals but keep CSN. When we change our location we lose CSN.

    Dish RV support # = 888-309-0370
