Cisco modem for Comcast internet

Having problem with Comcast want to start charging me $8 a month rental on a Cisco 2100 cable modem that I can buy for only $34. Can I purchase the same modem and replace it with out having to jump through a bunch of hoops setting it up, such as software and drivers?
  • Update. Got my $12 Cisco and called in. Took me a half hour to convince the girl I did not want to change my package for their tv service. Finally said I'm hanging up an calling century link. Got connected an it works great and will pay for its self in only 6weeks. Took there Cisco back to the service center expecting a fight. Took 1 minute and was painless.
  • Found a Cisco 2100 for $12 shipped.(gotta love outdated stuff on a beer budget!) The 2100 I have now has worked great for over 10 years and is plenty fast enough for my needs. Going to give it a try, it will pay for itself in less than 2 months. Thanks for the reply's.
  • The Cisco DPC2100 is a DOCSIS (Data Over Cable Services Interface Specification) 2.0 modem. It may work on a 3.0 network but it may limit your download speed. looks like Cisco stopped making the modem in 2012 Cisco support
  • Check Comcast's site here for modem compatibility before you commit. Comcast (and others) are using a protocol called DOCSIS 3.0 that is not supported on older modems. After swapping to a newer modem, just call their support line and they will activate your modem with the MAC address on the new one. I believe Comcast will push any firmware updates the vendor supplies them after they do testing on the update.
  • Time-Warner charges me $5.99/month to lease heir cable modem. Included in my bill this month was a list of compatible modems that will work with T-W. I just ordered one of the listed ones from Amazon; will post results after I receive it. I think it was about $62 including tax, plus free shipping.
  • Make sure that they will allow you to use your own connected to their service. Some companies used to be real bad about that. When Charter upgraded their service recently, they replaced mine and my daughters with theirs, at no additional charge.
  • Yes. You can buy your own from any elec. retailer. But you'll have to have the cable co. provision (activate) it. This will involve a phone call to their support team.
