OP here. Maybe I should try to explain better. I want to back up so that if my computer goes down I can get my "stuff" back. And maybe not with the computer that broke, maybe a(new)or different one. I just thought the cloud was better, "experts" (so to speak) keeping my data safer than me.
As others have said an external drive and good backup software will do this well, you don't need cloud backup for that. However if you are also concerned about what happens if your house burns down taking your computer and backups with it, then adding cloud backup to the mix is a good idea.
Personally I do regular full system backups locally and backup key data to the cloud. That way I feel I am covered for any eventuality.
For local backup I recommend
Macrium Reflect. Please do yourself a favor and stay away from Acronis True Image Home. Run away, it is the most bug ridden software I have ever used. You want backup you can depend on, True Image Home is anything but.
For cloud backup I use
Crashplan. One advantage is that it has clients for Windows Mac & Linux so whatever operating system you are using, you are covered.
Just remember whatever ever else you do stay away from Acronis True Image.
