Direct tv splitter

DirecTv satellite systems come in two types, SWM and non-SWM. SWM lines can use a splitter and send signals to several separate receivers for several TV's. Non-swm lines can not be split. The maximum number of tuners that one SWM line can serve is eight.

A SWM LNB has one cable coming out of it; a non-SWM LNB has four cables coming out of it.

A SWM splitter must pass special frequencies; here is one that is DTv approved: 2- way SWM splitter

WE run two TV's off one LNB for years now.

Each receiver has it's own cable off the antenna.

Let me ask this:
If you want to have 2 sat. dishes, one R/T mount and the other portable ground mounted; is it possible to have a splitter in between the one receiver and the two dishes?
Currently when the R/T dish is blocked by trees, we pull out the portable, and then disconnect the R/T dish coaxial from receiver and then connect the portable dishes coaxial to the receiver.
Would be so much better if we could just flip a switch between the 2 dishes or have a splitter placed inline to have the receiver use the dish that has line of sight.
Maybe a A/B switch?

Same here, I have 3 part time homes and 3 RV's, all set up with a garden variety Radio Shack splitter downstream of the receiver; to mirror the main living room TV in the Bedroom. one Sat, one LNB, one cable, one recvr. all SD of course, no need to complicate life with HD.
There is only one of me and I can only watch one show at a time, so this works fine for my needs. I use a remote IR extender when I need to change channels from the BR.

Ditto you need 2 LNB's. We had to add an LNB to our dome dish.

To run TWO televisions off a ONE LNB dish you'll need a multiplex switch. See link below. You'll need to run TWO coax cables from your sat dish to your multiplex switch. From the multiplex switch run one set of coax to your front DTV box and the other set to your rear one. This assumes, of course you're using DVRs. If you're using only the basic DTV box then you'll only need one coax from the multiplex to each box.

I added an extra coax from the outside compartment so I could use the external dish if the dome was blocked by trees. I then added a set of A-B switches from the multiplex switch. The top, or A is for the top dome and the bottom, or B is for the external dish......Good luck...Dennis

Reread your post. You cannot run 2 receivers on one LNB. You need 2 LNBs.

Do you have a SWM or multi switch type of dish and receivers as this determines what type of splitter you need to use. Also do you have a DTV receiver at each TV?

It sounds like you have a marginal splitter or the setup is incorrect. Plus if you are using vendor OTA rig cables you may have TV splitters on the coax.

Post more information and maybe someone can help.
