As of now I have dish, pay as you go, My son has Direct TV in his house. He does not have an RV but I do, So the million dollar question, If I buy another receiver can I get Direct TV about 200 miles from his house without interrupting his services. I have an Vanguard portable dish, I know I have to change the setting from Dish to Direct.

We have DirectTV which we have "slaved" off a friends subscription and which we get nationwide. With the RV plan you choose to either receive New York or LA programming. In your case if you are only going 200mi from your sons house you should get local programming just with an additional decoder on his plan.

How are you going to get the card for the receiver to talk to Direct TV?

Look up the sat spot feed on a Sat feed Map and see if you are in his "oval" of local coverage ( don't have the web site for direct handy) .. You will get CNN HBO etc no matter where you are but the Local channels are what you may be out of range of For the above comment the card doesn't need to "Talk" it just need to recieve so it doesn't need to be connected to a Phone line or internet to work as long as you aren't ordering pay per view via the TV.Just FYI this is why the sat companies are concerned as they don't know where you are and feel that you being a separate person/ family should Buy your own service not "steal".... in their mind at least..... service. The reciever charge doesn't cover service in multiple locations. Otherwise 5 houses could share one account!!! I wouldn't discuss this with them in any way... They wont like it. (Its in the small print on your Son's agreement with them. )

Without confusing you, you can get directv anywhere in the continental United States. You will not get your son's local channels beyond about a hundred miles or so. You will not be able to get the national locals out of New York or Los Angeles without changing his plan. But you will get all the other channels and if you have a roof antenna can get local channels over the air. Hope this helps. A second receiver on your son's account will add about $6.50 a month to his bill. Chuck

The satellite service from all providers is meant for the residents of that property only. It is no different than your son getting an extra receiver and handing it out to the neighbor. Each household should be paying full prices but rather each only has to pay 1/2.Now, if you are OK with that, the direct answer is that you can travel anywhere in the US, Canada or Mexico where the signal is available and you will be able to receive all channels and DTV will have no way of knowing what you are doing. The receivers cannot send any information to the provider unless they are plugged into a phone line (so don't do that).What you will not get once you travel 200-500 miles from your son's address are any of the Network TV programming from ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, CW and PBS.

Ok, if they were concerned about theft, they would shut down the home box when I move the locals to the area I am going, but they never do, so I don't think they even care.

What amazes me, is if they are able to stop the locals from the home area, why can't they stop the regular programming in the home area too ?

The locals are on a spot beam on the satellite, think focused flashlight beam shining down on one spot. Move the dish from under the beam and you loose the channels. They can easily be authorized for your receiver. The other channels are part of a broader package and dispersed nationwide on the satellites. Very difficult to impossible for them to shut down for a specific area. They can only shut it off completely for a specific receiver. There is no way to determine where that receiver is located. I am surprised that they let us move a 2nd receiver into our RV. But when I do that, they assume that I will NOT be using any service at the house, especially when I have the local channels moved to a specific area. But they have to know that many RV'ers will have a house sitter, or another family member using the service (w/o locals) at the house while they are gone in the RV. Therefore, even tho that really is theft of service, they are not concerned enuff about it to stop the RV receivers.

We were in the same situation, our daughter has Directv and we were going to see about her getting another receiver and using it in our coach for 3 months. It was such a hassle trying to get it done that we gave up and purchased the Dish pay as you go. Got a bundle package with the tailgater type dish and a receiver. It all just arrived yesterday. Haven't tried setting it up yet but will once the rain stops falling here. Don't need it until Jan. 1 so may wait till we get to our destination.

NOPE, this is THEFT of SERVICES and completely ILLEGAL. As I MENTIONED before many FOLKS will not and DO NOT CARE but that does not change the reality. Re-read my post and you might GET a better understanding of WHY this is illegal.

I give you an "A" for effort Bill, you hit it right on the head. It is illegal, it is theft but most don't give a rat's rear!

I have had DirecTV for years. They are a little harder to work with when traveling. Generally they are OK with two address changes per year. Dish by all reports allows more changes.

By contract all equipment on an account is suppose to be on the same antenna.

One year while in Arizona, they insisted on taking the SB equipment out of service while we were in the RV in Arizona. Normally we just leave it on the Account to simplify things. I have found a chat session an easy way to switch locations.

I have Wholehome DVR setup on my own routers in both the SB and RV. Trailer has 2 HDDVRs and we take a HD Receiver from SB for the belly TV. Chris
