DirecTV replacing old receivers without a receiver ID #

If you have a older KVH Sat Dish this is not good news if it uses a low speed data port. Fortunately I gave up on my KVH several years ago, but I did ask Direct if they had any new receivers with a low speed data port. Knew I was wasting both our time when she asked "what's a low speed data port".
If you have a older KVH dish and you are using DirecTV... good luck.

  • PM the pics to me or someone else and they will post them for you.
  • I lost the diagram. I went out and took apart the adapter I made and took pics. Not sure how to show them here. Basically- RJ22 plug with the tab up, wires left. From the bottom: black, red, green, yellow ( I used a length of old flat phone wire). On the DB9 side: DB9 female 5pins facing up and to the left: top is yellow, middle is red, bottom is black. green is unused. Then use an off the shelf USB to 9 pin serial adapter and mine just worked. DTV box is D12-300. I am not responsible if it doesnt work or smokes your box...
Edited to add: RJ22 is the smaller RJ11 style plug that plugged the handset to the base in and old school wired phone. Not the same size as RJ11 from base to the wall.
  • Mongo.......
your diagram will save me some serious headaches. please pm the info.
CSR at directv told me 2 nights ago that the phone jack on the new rx would work as a low speed data port guaranteed.....right I knew he was full of it ...I got his dish and it does have a usb port and a reg phone jack .
    Please help

Some of the newer Dtv boxes have undocumented low speed ports. I had to replace a really old box with the rj12 low speed port and the new box didnt have one. Turns out the USB port is actually the low speed port- used a USB to serial adapter and made a db9 to rj12 adapter from the diagram in my domes manual. Works just fine.

Is it possible to get the diagram pm to me. My receiver has a usb port and it would be great if it works.

I would be very interested in this information also.

  • I have a KVH dome on my 2005 HR Ambassador. I went through 2 receivers with low speed data ports (both would get extremely hot and then finally quit working). I now use the HD receiver from my home. My unit has 2 switches controlling the dome. 1 turns power on the dome. 2 enables the dome to search manually for a satalite. I can lock on to a satalite in just a few minuites using the manual search. My understanding is not all KVH units were installed with the manual search function. The OPERATORS MANUAL for my unit describes using the manual search function.
